‘Garden of Letters’ by Carlos Ucedda

‘Garden of Letters’ by  Carlos Ucedda Carlos Ucedda, who has been very active this year, also ends the year with one last great release. As always, the keyword is art-pop, and this year he has given it an enormously colourful variety, combining it with avant-garde pop or a touch of post-punk and dark wave.  ‘Garden of Letters’, the new release, follows the path of 80s dream/synth pop and provides a wonderful musical framework for the lyrics. The lyrics thematise the duality of love and loss. The song shows how love can be a source of joy and inspiration as well as pain and longing. The preservation and remembrance of past feelings indicate an attempt to preserve the emotional value and meaning of past relationships. The capriciousness of love, the failure of romantic promises, and the search for meaning and comfort in memories of past affection.   The listener is invited to reflect on the transience and emotional complexity of human relationships. The Wednesday Interview: Devin Reardon

Danke Devin.

Who inspired you to make music?

Simon and Garfunkel really inspired this first single a lot. I love folk music. In general though, I would my step dad actually inspired me a lot when I was a kid. Hewas a working musician, and he played 12 instruments. He toured playing  saxophone with KC and the Sunshine Band, and he taught me to play drums, and encouraged me to play music. He really was the first person to sit me down with a metronome and say, “stop, use this.”

What is your creative process like?

It was pretty chaotic… I tend to bounce between voice notes and scraps of paper, but I’m starting to get it down to a bit more of an art. Some orderly fashion! I get an idea: whether it’s a musical idea, or a line of lyrics, or both then I sit down and just have fun playing with it. Usually I record that session and then go back and pick it apart. That’s not as fun, but it’s really helped a lot with taking ideas and turning them into songs.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

I want to work with more singers & write some really lovely harmonies! Also I’d love to make more upbeat indie rock music with lots of bright shiny electric guitars, and then I’d love to do some African influenced stuff as well. Like Beatenberg. I guess a lot of stuff, whoops. I want to put this out into the universe: Can I collaborate with Beatenberg?

What is the most useful talent you have?

I can eat donuts really fast. I don’t know if that’s a talent. But I can do that, preferably Krispy Kreme.

...and of course your most useless talent is?

I can make myself sneeze, which, I guess, nowadays could clear a room? That could come in handy for something sometime!

If you could change anything in the past, what would it be?

I wish I had moved to Ireland sooner, honestly. I love it here. Also what I majored in at college,I would have picked music. I had a bit of a sordid journey, I studied musical theatre at first, then dropped out, then studied environmental science and sociology. Quite a tale to make me who I am today, and I wouldn’t trade that but… knowing a bit more about music theory would be great sometimes.

How do you feel the Internet (especially Social Media platforms) has impacted the music business?

You have to be a big social media machine to start making it big as a musician. Kind of addicted. But it is a tool, and the better you get at it, the more you get out of it!

What do you know about Austria?

Von Trap family? Are they from there? Also the Duke who was assasinated that begun world war 2, he was Austrian? I’m sorry, that may be a bit grim? Oh no, this probably is not impressive at all… I’m just trying not to Google anything. Obviously I must learn more!

Devin Reardon is....?

Devin Reardon is... a huge fan of spice bags. They are a thing you get at Asian restaurants in Ireland, they’re fries (chips? I’m sorry?), peppers, onions, fried chicken, and spices. They’re unreal… please bring me on next time you see me.

What’s next for you?

I’m releasing a new single next month!! It’s called Apple Blossom Breeze, and this is the first time I’ve talked about it! It’s another Indie-folk vibe but I’m super happy to share it with the world! And then another single in the works… and finally a 5-song EP to release this summer. I’m so excited!!
