Technoesque Poesie: "Stern" by Jioni , ENNA

The Artist: Specific Coast - "Home"

Home

“My earliest records of “Home” are acoustic instrumentals I recorded as voice memos on my phone in 2017. After a year of cryptic messages and intense longing, “Home” was my declaration to my long distance girlfriend that I was in it for the long haul” - lässt uns Dunne wissen. So we have to say Achtung: Close your eyes and let Specific Coast lead you "Home".

Des Weiteren bekamen wir auch die Möglichkeit Matt ein paar Fragen zu stellen und so können wir heute ein kurzes Q&A mit Specific Coast präsentieren. Thanks for your time!

Bio

A veteran of the music industry, Dunne has held positions in concert promotion, artist management, music publishing, and label management. After multiple peers in the industry had come to him for guidance, Dunne created Cactus Coast, a community where artists, songwriters, mixers, and producers could help each other achieve their goals. Dunne began hosting backyard concerts at his home in Silver Lake, providing a unique, intimate setting for artists like Royal & the Serpent to perform. Dunne used this safe space to test out new material for his own project, Specific Coast. Eventually the house shows turned into networking events, which turned into writing sessions, which turned into songs, which turned into several placements in a Netflix series. After years of helping others transform their dreams into realities, Specific Coast returns with his highly anticipated single “Home.”

The Interview

Specific Coast is...?

Specific Coast is me, Matt! I'm a singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles. I've worked in the music industry for nearly 10 years and Specific Coast is my passion project turned dream job. 5 years ago I started a collective of artists, producers, songwriters, and musicians called Cactus Coast. The goal was to create a community of creatives that could help each other achieve their goals.
I started putting on house shows in my backyard, providing a unique, intimate setting for artists to perform to their friends. The house shows turned into networking events which turned into recording sessions and I'm proud to report my song "Home" was created with all members of my little collective. Paul Edelman provided guitar, bass, piano and co-produced the track with me, Nick Spreigl provided drums, and Gehring Miller mixed and mastered it.
My intentions were always to help my community first. Why pay a stranger to do something when you can pay your friend? Specific Coast the name is a nod to the collective and a mispronnciation of Pacific. As a young child on the east coast I used to think it was Specific Coast instead of Pacific Coast.

What or who inspired you to "Home"?

I wrote home for my then long distance girlfriend.  It was my way of telling her that even though we were temporarily apart, she was where my home was now.

What is your creative process like?

I never sit down to write a song. Usually I pickup my guitar and just start playing. Often times lyrics will just come to me and I'll start recording voice memos on my phone working out melodies and refining the lyrics. I've found that if I don't get the bulk of a song done the first time I'm inspired, there is a very slim chance I ever finish it.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

As a solo project, I'm really inspired by bands like The Lumineers and The Head and the Heart. It might be too obvious for my song "Home."
I think they both do an incredible job of taking acoustic based songs and adding layers without overcomplicating things. Both of their self-titled albums are 2 of my favorite records and I constantly return to them for inspiration.

Who inspired you to make music in general?

I've always been inspired by acoustic music. For some reason I have a love for sad Irish singer-songwriters. Damien Rice, Hozier, and James Vincent McMorrow just to name a few. Damien Rice's 'O' in particular is so raw that when I heard it I immediately fell in love.
Everything has almost a live feel to it. I found myself adjusting the volume during the soft parts so I wouldn't miss an inhale. It's definitely made me think about how I record my music and I always try to achieve a level of intimacy in my recordings.

What is the most useful talent you have?

I can really understand people. Being part of the music industry and a creative, I can easily flow with both parties. I think this helps me as an artist but also as an artist manager. I've learned how to manage my own expectations and communicate with others.

If you could change anything in the past, what would it be?

Release music sooner! When I moved to Los Angeles, I met so many musicians and people in the music industry. They would all talk about how great they were, how big they were going to be and I believed them. I didn't have that kind of confidence in myself so I thought, maybe this wasn't for me. It wasn't until I landed 5 songs in the hit Netflix series, Ginny & Georgia, that I really started believing in my music again.

How do you feel the Internet (especially Social Media platforms) has impacted the music business?

I think social media in the music business has been really positive. It's free marketing! It really depends on how you use it but I think it's silly not to be on it. Can you have too much of it? Of course. You can also have too much sugar!

What do you know about Austria?

Not much! I know Austria is in my top 25 countries on Spotify for artists and that "Home" was added to a playlist called Brandy Melville Vienna. So if you are shopping in a Brandy Melville in Vienna, you may hear my song!

What’s next for you?

I'm releasing my second song this year, Wasn't Love, on June 2nd. I'm hoping that once it is safe I can resume my house shows some time this summer.
