Neil Armstrong’s ‘In the Borderlands’: A Nostalgic Journey Through Love and Loss

“In the Borderlands” by Neil Armstrong Neil Armstrong steps onto our blog stage for the first time as an artist. His music pays tribute to the icons of the 80s, including The Cure, Tears For Fears, Pet Shop Boys, and Howard Jones. Oscillating between the realms of Synth-Pop/Rock and New Wave, Armstrong’s transnational work, fluctuating between Spain and Scotland, is expressed in his latest piece, “In the Borderlands.” The song takes us on an introspective journey through the nuances of human relationships, unfolding the complexity of interpersonal dynamics . It exposes these nuances on the operating table of music, bringing them to life with a nostalgic touch reminiscent of the 80s, thereby endowing the work with a soul. The arrangement, inspired by the musical giants of that era, is a testament to Armstrong’s exceptional talent for composing and arranging songs. Every note, every melody in “In the Borderlands” is carefully chosen to tell a story of love: its loss and rediscovery, wit

Q&A: Anna Thompson

Anna Thompson

... is a rising pop artist from Seattle. When she was 16, Anna won a national talent competition and was offered a record deal from a major record label. Ultimately, the label had a change of heart, however, being told “you’re not famous enough” set Anna on a path to independently release her music and prove that having a million Instagram followers is not a prerequisite to success in the music industry. Q&A

Anna Thompson is...?

I'm an independent pop artist from Seattle, WA.

Who inspired you to make music in general?

I've been making music my entire life. It's practically been my full time job since I was 5. Nobody in particular inspired me to get into it as a child, to my memory. I just always knew it's what I wanted to do. Although, during my sophomore year of high school, I started listening to pop music.

Upon hearing "Greedy" by Ariana Grande for the first time, I was incredibly impressed, and inspired to sing the way she does. I became obsessed with listening to her songs, and attempting to achieve such impressive vocal feats. I couldn't even come close at first. But with several years of practice and dedication, I could finally hit those high notes and nail those runs.

What is your creative process like?

My songs usually start when random ideas pop into my head. Usually a lyric, a melody, and when I'm lucky, both at once. I'll write it down, or record it as a voice note. Then when I have time, I'll sit down at the piano, and write a whole song around it. Then, I'll take it into the studio, record it a cappella, put production under it, then finish recording the vocals.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

I would love to collaborate with Ariana someday.

What is the most useful talent you have?

I have perfect pitch, and it often comes in handy in the studio when somebody asks for the key of something or what chord works where.

What do you prefer, a live gig or a studio session?

I love both for different reasons. But right now, I'd love to do a live show.

If you could change anything in the past, what would it be?

Nothing! I'm happy with how my life is going, and it all happened this way because of my past.

How do you feel the Internet (especially Social Media platforms) has impacted the music business?

Social media has completely changed the way the industry works. It's truly a double edged sword. It can be a wonderful tool, because it gives anybody the opportunity to promote their music and build a brand for themselves. However, in order to be signed by a record label these days, you need to have already grown that following. While it's easier than it used to be, not every talented musician is capable of amassing 100k followers on instagram on their own.

Social media has opened the doors to independence as an artist. If you can crack the code, you might never need a label. Your music can reach an audience by itself, online. Though it makes it quite frustrating for those who want to take the label route, as they're only interested in those who've already proven themselves online, independently.

What’s next for you?

More music! A couple of much awaited records that have gotten attention on TikTok are now finished, and nearly ready to come out. I'm incredibly excited for everybody to hear them.
