From Vintage Tapes to Modern Waves: SFMD’s ‘Diving Board’ Revives the '80s!

“Diving Board” by SFMD Emerging from the vibrant heart of Liège , a band has surfaced, encapsulating the quintessence of a nostalgic epoch with a contemporary flourish. SFMD, an illustrious Belgian collective hailing from the Francophone sector, has been meticulously sculpting a distinct niche within the musical cosmos, harmonizing an eclectic fusion of Synthwave and pop elements. Incepted in the twilight of the 2000s, SFMD has unveiled two auditory compilations that have garnered acclamation from aficionados within Belgium and the international expanse. The ensemble’s constituents are progenies of the 1980s,  a decade enshrined within their sonic creations. Their oeuvre is a homage to the emblematic resonances, harmonies, and visual artistry of their formative years. Esteemed bands such as Depeche Mode, Talk Talk, Duran Duran, coupled with virtuosos like David Bowie and Giorgio Moroder, have indelibly influenced their artistic odyssey.   SFMD’s most recent oeuvre, “Diving Board,” un

The Artist: Idle Dream - "The first time"

Idle Dream

Idle Dream is a Dublin based duo, comprising of Connor McCabe (Vocals) and Chris McGrath (Guitar). Originally formed by Chris, the band has gone through a few  lineup changes over the years. In January 2020, Connor joined the band, giving it a renowned purpose and energy. In March 2020, saw the release of the single "A Matter Of The Heart". Since then, like the rest of the world plans had to be placed on hold. In the meantime, the band has written and recorded songs and now we're excited to release "The First Time"  , our brand new single.

The first time

About the mixed emotions that stems from listening to your head while following your heart, Dublin duo Idle Dream’s second single ‘The First Time’ captures a wild abandonment tempered by responsibility. Prior to Connor McCabe joining the once-solo project, Chris had already written and recorded ‘The First Time’ with producer Ben Haynes. The duo then put the finishing touches on the song together in Dublin’s Soundcaster Studios, hatte ich gelesen.

So we have to say Achtung: "The first time" is not the last time that I will listen to Idle Dream.

Q&A

Idle Dream is/are..?

I suppose to take it back to the beginning, the name Idle Dream came about from being an unemployed musician and "The Dream"of making it. The band has gone through various incarnations, from being a band project to a solo endeavour. In January of 2020, Connor came on board as the vocalist and now we're a duo. So yeah, it's a much more settled line up these days.

Who inspired you to make music?

It was more of a gradual process, I went from a relatively sporty kid to one who became more interested in guitar and records at the age of 11. Endlessly watching music videos on TV and listening to the radio. Then  progressing into playing in bands with friends

What or who inspired you to "The first time"?

'The First Time' was borne out of having feelings for somebody but being that slight bit older. Having those old familiar feelings but from a slightly more experienced view.

You are from Dublin, how would you describe the Irish music scene?

The Irish music scene is probably in one of it's best phases at the moment. The diversity of the music and the people creating it, is amazing, There is a real lived in urban/rap scene, that's genuine and authentic and it was only a few years ago people would cringe hearing an Irish artist rap in their natural brogue. Not only in Dublin, but there is so much good stuff coming out of Limerick, Cork and Galway as well, of all genres.

What is your creative process like?

Very simple, I pick up a guitar and then scribble down my ideas on a piece of paper

What do you prefer, to play live or a studio session?

Honestly, I prefer the studio just seeing the songs come to life. As far as live goes, I struggle a bit with that, I don't see myself as a performer. I'm trying to get better at it, it's not a natural instinct for me.

If you could change anything in the past, what would it be?

On a personal level, in my early 20's I got very introverted, insular and generally just lost to my own thoughts,

What’s next for you?

Probably go back into the studio. I also hope to get the live side of the band up and running in the next few months and challenge some old fears :)
