Neil Armstrong’s ‘In the Borderlands’: A Nostalgic Journey Through Love and Loss

“In the Borderlands” by Neil Armstrong Neil Armstrong steps onto our blog stage for the first time as an artist. His music pays tribute to the icons of the 80s, including The Cure, Tears For Fears, Pet Shop Boys, and Howard Jones. Oscillating between the realms of Synth-Pop/Rock and New Wave, Armstrong’s transnational work, fluctuating between Spain and Scotland, is expressed in his latest piece, “In the Borderlands.” The song takes us on an introspective journey through the nuances of human relationships, unfolding the complexity of interpersonal dynamics . It exposes these nuances on the operating table of music, bringing them to life with a nostalgic touch reminiscent of the 80s, thereby endowing the work with a soul. The arrangement, inspired by the musical giants of that era, is a testament to Armstrong’s exceptional talent for composing and arranging songs. Every note, every melody in “In the Borderlands” is carefully chosen to tell a story of love: its loss and rediscovery, wit

If I Hadn’t Met You

Q&A

Who inspired you to make music in general?

Embarking on his musical journey at the age of 12, his parents needed confirmation that he could actually play an instrument after his piano teacher told them, when he was six years old, that he would never play music due to a clear lack of talent. This confirmation came in the form of a 12 year old boy, patiently practicing his guitar for five hours a day, and mastering the instrument at a young age. Moving on from Rock & Metal in middle school to Blues & Jazz in high school, Lior has evolved into a singer-songwriter with a unique voice in his adult years. Lior is ready to take his first steps as a performer and spread his music around the world.

...and especially to the song "If I hadn't met you"?

"I like to write about my feelings, emotions, thoughts and what's not... It's just my way of processing things. I always love to say that I didn't choose writing, It chose me, and when I don't do that, things just don't feel right... I'm deeply inspired by how John Mayer expresses himself in his songs. His ability to capture a moment or a feeling in one beautiful and simple sentence is incomparable.

Learning from John, for me, a song is ready when the melody, production and lyrics express my thoughts and emotions effortlessly, when I get to that - it's time to release" The song “If I Hadn’t Met You”, talks about the moment you understand who's the right person for you and what's making him/her so right for you. It highlights the moment that you don't feel like you are the person he/she dreamt of, but you are willing to fight for this love because you know you are also the right person for him/her.

What is your creative process like?

My creative process always starts from the guitar. It can be a simple melody, tune or chord progression which I feel expresses some sort of an emotion. When I feel I know what the emotion is, I put down the guitar and start writing. I write like you would write to your own very personal notebook, no walls or filters.  The next stage is to fit my thoughts into a lyrical and melodic pattern that would match the song's. Next, is finding the right strumming pattern on the guitar that will enrich the melody and lyrics. From there, it's practice, practice and more practice :)

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

Wow there are so many options for me I wouldn't know where to start from... My musical journey included so many genres that my answers would vary from Dream Theater's guitarist - John Petrucci, to the versatile Dennis Lloyed and up to the inspiring John Mayer and Ed Sheeran.

What is the most useful talent you have?

Probably my ability to persist and practice each and every day without giving up to myself. Talented people come and go all the time, it's the hard working people we appreciate and remember.

How do you feel the Internet (especially Social Media platforms) has impacted the music business?

Well... on the one hand, you have all those platforms where you can broadcast yourself and show your talent. You don't have to wait for your turn to go up on that stage... On  the other hand, it is harder to stand out in the vast ocean of musicians trying to be noticed all across the Internet.

What's next for you?

I plan to release another single in November called "Bus Notes". I also have an album coming called "Between Leaps" which will be released in 2022. I Hope when COVID gets better, I can start performing on the local stages.
