‘The Journey’ - The Octopus Division

‘The Journey’ - The Octopus Division In ‘The Journey,’ a sonic mosaic unfolds that—permeated by neon-soaked synth pads and a melody that feels like memory—is less a song than a spiritual compass. The time that relentlessly pursues us, according to ‘Time keeps chasing us every day’, is not portrayed as an enemy, but as a constant touchstone that we face with our heads held high: ‘ We won't let the rain wash us away’ . Photography, here metaphorically as a key to the past, opens doors to moments that seem long gone but live on within us. The chorus – a kind of collective mantra – describes not just a journey, but an intertwining of stories that support each other. The garden in which hopes take root becomes a symbol of what must be nurtured in order to flourish. And when ‘ our songs have lost a note or two ’, it is not a flaw, but proof of lived depth. A song that is not meant to be heard, but to be lived through – like a familiar glance at an old photo album by candlelight. b...

The Artist: Tom Purves - "Rum Sunset - Remix"

Tom Purves

Born in Brussels to Scottish and Portuguese parents, this UK based songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist has begun specialising in funky and soulful tunes under his own name. This is following a brief but successful run of sold out shows and a European mini-tour with Cardiff based rock group: Döppelgänger back in 2019. Having already released his debut DIY EP: Defiance in Youth, 21 year old Tom Purves now leads an exciting solo career with facets of Jazz, Soul and Pop. He can also be seen sharing updates and providing exclusive content on his instagram page as well as his Youtube and TikTok channels.

Rum Sunset - Remix

So we have to say Achtung: Tom Purves on the funky, soulful way to the Rum Sunset.

The Interview

Tom Purves is...?

Tom Purves is an aspiring writer, producer and performer, born in Belgium to Scottish and Portuguese parents and based in London. Primary instruments include guitar, vocals and saxophone.

Who inspired you to make music in general, and especially to the song "Rum Sunset"?

Musical inspirations would include writer/producers such as Tom Misch (especially for the original 'Rum Sunset' track), FKJ, and also artists like Leon Bridges and Bill Withers

What is your creative process like?

My creative process differs from each song but it often starts with very rough voice memos on my phone, containing a hook or lyric. I then expand on it both sonically, on a software like Logic Pro X, and  lyrically to form a demo. Finally I fully record the remaining parts and mix the final project (at times changing certain elements along the way).

What is the most useful talent you have?

My most useful talent, without trying to sound full of myself, would be having a good ear. It's really helped me pick up new instruments and writing/production techniques fairly quickly. I feel we as artists are forever in a learning process, making mistakes and improving every time. Having a good ear, in tandem with patience and determination, has really benefited me in getting to where I am now. It's a talent I'm very lucky and grateful to have.

If you could change anything in the past, what would it be?

It's very easy to say that I wished I had learned things quickly and experimented more in the past. But then again time and patience is also critical. So overall I'd say nothing (save for maybe some aesthetic choices as a teenager, beards never look good at that age).

What’s next for you?

I hope to get back to writing more material, I already have some lined up. I'll be living in London and hopefully collaborating and learning off of other extremely talented musicians and generally expanding  on my musical landscape.
