Mother Culture
We are Mother Culture, brothers Darcy and Spencer Ward. We grew up together being raised on a steady diet of The Beatles and Beach Boys and have only continued for gather more love for the world of music ever since, so much in fact we decided at the end of 2019 to get serious and release our own into the world.
After self producing and releasing our debut EP 'To Be Frank' in Nov 2020 we have continued to learn and grow as creatives.
Scaramouche
"Scaramouche" by Mother Culture a journey in the past to take a look in the future.
Q&A
Mother Culture is...?
Mother Culture is some sort of musical project we started together around the end of 2019. By the way we're brothers Darcy and Spencer Ward from Melbourne, Australia. People have told us that we make indie pop rock music so let's just go with that for now. All of our tracks we make completely DIY writing, performing and producing everything you hear together from our home studio we've built over the years.
As far as where we got the name it came from Darcy's old band from a few years ago, it's meant to be used as a term to describe an earlier culture that has widespread influence on many later cultures over time and that seems like a pretty dope meaning for a band name. Honestly though we just kept it as a little tribute to our mum.
Who inspired you to make music in general ...and especially to the song "Scaramouche"?
Our main inspiration to start making music in general really came from our family, particularly from our father who was a muso himself in his younger years. Additionally we inspire each other internally through our musicianship and influences, the elephant in the room being The Beatles. The main inspiration for Scaramouche actually came from our childhood pet cat of the same name. There was one day many moons ago I was jamming in the backyard with my dear friend Dhanesh watching Scaramouche galavant about before he got his claws stuck in our flyscreen door while trying to open it, thus the riff and inspiration for the song was born.
What is your creative process like?
In a word, a mess. To elaborate, the songs get written by one or both of us - maybe 50/50 or maybe 95/5. Then we take them into our home studio and flesh out the arrangement the song is calling for. That will likely be a crappy demo which we use as a blueprint before putting together the proper recorded version which after some love and labour is ready for release.
What is the most useful talent you have?
The ability to hear.
What do you prefer, a live gig or a studio session?
Well seeing as we haven't played a proper live gig in about 2 years thanks to covid, we're definitely going to go with preferring time in the studio. It's also fun to twist knobs.
When do you decide that a song is ready for a release?
When we're sick of it and our mum approves.
If you could change anything in the past, what would it be?
That's quite the existential question. Perhaps the big bang? It's widely considered a bad move and made a lot of people very angry.
How do you feel the Internet (especially Social Media platforms) has impacted the music business?
What's social media?
What’s next for you?
Pumping more singles than people know what to do with and hopefully playing some gigs once Australia stops living lavida lockdown.
