"A dream I dream" by MY BABY

MY BABY is a Dutch-New Zealand trio.

MY BABY

MY BABY is a Dutch-New Zealand trio, they play roots driven hypnotic dance. It’s a sound informed by gospel and blues singing and playing fused with ancient folk melodies.
Added to that is the rawness of seventies funk, african desert blues, moroccan gnawa, indian raga and a touch of EDM all played on guitars and drums without using computers or samples.
They have been spreading their psychedelic blues-trance rave to the approval of audiences worldwide since 2012, featuring on renowned festivals such as Glastonbury (UK), Isle of Wight (UK), Sziget (HU), Fusion (DE), Exit (RS), Lowlands (NL) and Pinkpop (NL).

A dream I dream

"A dream I dream" by MY BABY or the ghost of the past meets the future.

Q&A

(w/ Cato van Dijck)

MY BABY is/are...?

We’re MY BABY from Amsterdam, a three piece consisting of Cato van Dijck on vocals, bass and violin, Joost van Dijck on drums and New Zealand guitarist Daniel de Vries. We are a dance rave infused psychedelic rock and roll band.

My Baby, the name, is based on a character, a phantom muse, that we created together when we started writing songs. We did that because we wanted to have a character in the songs that resembles all three of us, our combined feelings and views of the world

Who inspired you to make music in general ...and especially to the song "A dream I dream"?

I think probably our parents are the main culprits. Both for Joost and I and Daniel our parents were involved in bands or folk music though not at a professional level it still played an important part in their lives and obviously made an indelible impression on us kids
"A dream I dream" was quite a serendipitous affair really …Something that naturally fell together over time. There is a bit of a Beatlesque vibe you could say which nods to our parent’s influence.

The track creates that 90s Bristol Sound meets Dream Pop atmosphere, how much time did you spend on the Mix and to find the right sounds?

A lot of the basic sound and backing of that track was created on the first demo - but we spent a lot of time reworking those basic elements so it sounds more processed and produced.

Vocals and Drums sound amazing as well, were they part of the concept from the very first beginning?

The Drum tracks are actually still the early takes from the demo we kept, however the vocal melody and lyric came from a writing session much later. Initially we tried different song ideas on the track but once that fell into our laps it started making sense.

Having that incessant hypnotic beat with a dreamy vocal layered on top provided a really nice contrast
The rocky outro at the end is an idea that was there much earlier that had a punky Bristol vibe. That again provides a nice contrast that still made sense.

What is your creative process like?

Most of the time we end up keeping inspired parts from a demo and rework them into an arrangement, then we try out different melody band lyric ideas that might fit. Obviously in covid times we had more time for this than usual…

When do you decide that a song is ready for a release?

We don’t! Haha . We are coerced by our management.

Do you remember your first ever self written song?

I think I was about six years old when I first tried writing a song with my sister I remember some lines in broken English but perhaps it’s best we never recorded it!! It was a bit Reminiscent of Ace of Base. Haha ....I grew up in the 90’s!

What's your most useful talent besides music?

I’m a good organiser, which is very useful when you are in a band

What do you prefer, a live gig or a studio session?

Live gig. Nothing beats a dancey sweaty crowd that joins you in creating a special vibe where you feel connected and uplifted

What’s next for you?

We are looking forward to releasing our new album in 2022 And hopefully enter a positive and inspired year where we are able to leave behind the troubles and pressures of a pandemic
