The Fear of Omnipresent Observation: ‘The Crawling Eye’ by The Silence Industry

‘The Crawling Eye’ by The Silence Industry On this very Friday, we whisk you away into the sublime yet shadow-laden realm of Goth Rock, where the heart of Post-Punk beats incessantly. The Silence Industry has recently set a benchmark with ‘The Crawling Eye’ that other artists will find difficult to surpass in the foreseeable future. Endowed with an impressive back catalog,  The Silence Industry approaches a topic of grave seriousness in their latest release. The track addresses omnipresent surveillance, shedding light on its profound implications as well as the personal apprehensions it evokes.   Musically, Graham Jackson creates a scene of distressing perfection, where elements of Death-Rock leave us breathless and the fear of omnipresent observation becomes palpable. Driven by a dark Post-Punk aura, Graham rises with a performance at the microphone that recalls memories of Jaz Coleman (Killing Joke). The artist not only succeeds in maintaining the tension for nearly seven minutes b

"You only want me when I'm gone" by Jeffrey Chan

NENESBUTLER PRESENTS Music Blog Submission

Jeffrey Chan

Giving pop and retro influences a modern electronic edgeJeffrey Chan is a singer/songwriter who is unafraid to push the boundaries. His 2018 album, FaultLine was a blend of pop, funk, and dance elements to his sound with a slightly urban twist. Preceded by the release and success of his hip-hop influenced lead single Porsche and the 80’s synth-driven Breathe Heavy, the album led Jeffrey into new visual and sonic territories.

As the world was turned upside down in 2020, Jeffrey’s initial plans to tour his previous albums had come to a halt and like the rest of the world, he had to rethink his plans.
His next single Glow was selected as part of a weekly live streamed event dubbed #QuarantineSessions, when fans across the world selected what would be his next single.
This glittery and sugar-sweet new track was created with a limited powerhouse team as a result of quarantine, and has quickly become his most successful track to date. This was quickly followed up by the release of Try (an 80’s tinged pop mid-tempo co-produced with Dibs) and with the pop-house dance track, Call My Name in June 2021.

You only want me when I'm gone

Heute erschien der neueste Track respektive Single von Jeffery Chan namens "You only want me when I'm gone".

Q&A

Jeffrey Chan is...?

I am a singer/songwriter from Sydney, Australia and I love writing catchy, relatable music that just makes you feel good when listening to it. I love to use my music as avenues to explore new stories, ideas, or characters. Being in the pop genre and having a baritone/bass vocal aren't really two things that usually go together but I'm hoping that's what makes me stand out!

Who inspired you to make music in general?

I've always loved music - there are so many home recordings of me as a kid singing and dancing along to the TV in the living room with a headset microphone. Growing up I've always wanted to be a musician so I would say it's just a dream I've been chasing since I was a kid!

...and especially to the song "You only want me when I'm gone"?

"You Only Want Me When I'm Gone" actually came about when I was talking to my friends and the phrase slipped into conversation - a lot of my songs start that was a things that I hear on a daily basis or a phrase or word that really interests me and from there I'm to build a whole world and visual around it.

The track creates a great IndiePop meets 80s atmosphere, are the 80s one of your favorite decades concerning music?

Hands down my favourite era of music is the 80's and 90's which is where a lot of inspiration from my music comes from!

What is your creative process like?

Every time it's a little different but usually as I'm writing the song or the lyrics, I am also thinking about what the music video would look like or what sort of theme/idea I'm going to play with on the cover shoot or so. The creative process for me always works in tandem but it's a little different each time and I think that's what I find so exciting about it all!

When do you decide that a song is ready for a release?

I'm always writing tonnes of new music and lyrics that sometimes never sees the light of day, but at certain points when I am writing and I'm recording a demo of the track - it's just a certain something that makes it feel different; whether it is a hook or a melody or a lyric, you just sort of know that this is the right song to release next and that's what I felt with 'You Only Want Me When I'm Gone'

Do you remember your first ever self written song?

I do! I was only 12 and I entered a songwriting competition through my school and so I wrote my song and everything and a portable recording studio (that was in a huge van) came and I recorded the song in one afternoon there. If I remember correctly it was a pop-rock ballad called 'Maybe It's Time'

What's your most useful talent besides music?

I am a fantastic cook. I am always cooking and testing out new recipes and what not. I would one day love to do a podcast like Table Manners with Jessie and Lennie Ware where I invite fellow musicians over to talk and cook them dinner!

What was the first ever Pop/Rock/... song you listened to?

I can't remember exactly but the first album I remember buying as a kid was Hilary Duff's self-titled album (always love a good throwback)

What do you prefer, a live gig or a studio session?

I think each one has it's own charm! I love feeding off the energy of an audience when I'm performing live but I also love the studio setting (being a perfectionist) where I can tinker with every little sound, lyric, recording until I'm happy with it

What’s next for you?

I'm planning on releasing more music over the next year and hopefully slot in a few live shows - still got a lot that's unplanned at the moment but I'm taking it all one step at a time and seeing what comes up! I think an EP is on the way that will encompass everything from Glow (the single) till now.
