Neil Armstrong’s ‘In the Borderlands’: A Nostalgic Journey Through Love and Loss

“In the Borderlands” by Neil Armstrong Neil Armstrong steps onto our blog stage for the first time as an artist. His music pays tribute to the icons of the 80s, including The Cure, Tears For Fears, Pet Shop Boys, and Howard Jones. Oscillating between the realms of Synth-Pop/Rock and New Wave, Armstrong’s transnational work, fluctuating between Spain and Scotland, is expressed in his latest piece, “In the Borderlands.” The song takes us on an introspective journey through the nuances of human relationships, unfolding the complexity of interpersonal dynamics . It exposes these nuances on the operating table of music, bringing them to life with a nostalgic touch reminiscent of the 80s, thereby endowing the work with a soul. The arrangement, inspired by the musical giants of that era, is a testament to Armstrong’s exceptional talent for composing and arranging songs. Every note, every melody in “In the Borderlands” is carefully chosen to tell a story of love: its loss and rediscovery, wit

Nobody but you

Thanks for your time!

Q&A

David Mac is...?

...an alternative R&B singer, songwriter and producer from the Gold Coast. I have been singing for the majority of my life, and began producing music in high school.
I have been playing the guitar for roughly 3 and half years now. My style of music incorporates meticulous production with ambient synths and lyrics that hit close to home.

Who inspired you to make music in general and especially to the song "Nobody but you"?

My inspirations are The 1975, The Weeknd, Billie Eilish and Mansionair. These artists have such a unique, almost cinematic feel to their music, which is something I try to replicate in "Nobody But You".

What is your creative process like and was it different for this song?

My creative process usually entails of laying out what synths/ pads I want to use for the foundation of the track. I try to create a certain vibe for it before working on a melody. I usually write lyrics once I’ve got the majority of the instrumentals down.
I do this because I feel that the instrumentals act as a guide to what direction I want the lyrics to follow. This is exactly what I did for "Nobody But You".

What's your most useful talent besides music?

I would say story writing. I completed a few creative writing courses during my university degree and I really enjoyed it. I think that I will eventually want to write and direct short films that accompany my music.

How would you describe 2021 in a sentence?

2021 was a chaotic wake-up call which made a lot of people realise that the important things in life are doing what you enjoy and spending time with friends and family, not worrying about pet peeves or daily occurrences that are so insignificant to the bigger picture of your life.

What was the first ever Pop/Electro/etc. song you listened to or remember on?

If I can call correctly, "Often" by The Weeknd was the song that got me back into alternative R&B/ pop.

Do you remember your first ever self-written song?

Yes. A song called ‘Treetops’. My mates and I worked on this together and it was the first song I actually released back in 2018.

What’s next for you?

To continue releasing songs that people will love, and to improve my artistry. I would like to continue working on my live performances and looking at various ways to connect with my audience.
