Please Insert Coin: ‘Games’ by The Octopus Division

‘Games’ by The Octopus Division If you love the 80s and don't know Matt Muncie (aka The Octopus Division), you've definitely missed something. But as it's never too late for good music, you can catch up on what you've missed anytime and almost anywhere.  The Octopus Division's latest work is called ‘Games’ and once again represents the decade of neon lights perfectly. The major sequences are classically chosen, and you'll be hooked from the start. Back in the world of arcade games, the song becomes an intense journey of self-discovery, describing personal growth. Timelessness and shared experiences emphasize the importance of interpersonal bonds. ‘Games’ creates a dreamy atmosphere that allows you to immerse yourself in another world and makes you think about the future - all because you pressed the start button.  The entire production clearly bears Matt's signature, with classic drums, synth arrangements, and above all, the usual concise vocal part, which...

"So Cool" by LOW GIRL

Low Girl release their second single, followed by their sophomore EP in March 2022

LOW GIRL

Today Low Girl release their second single, followed by their sophomore EP in March 2022. The band have gone from strength to strength since releasing debut 'Big Now' in May 2021, thanks largely from support from bloggers and radio, as well as Spotify.
Previous single 'Big Now' hit a couple of editorial Spotify lists, featured on Radio 1, Radio X and was playlisted by 6Music, as well as seeing the band hit number 2 on the Hypem chart around release time too. The band went on to play a sold out headline tour, played Reading & Leeds for BBC Intro and Wild Paths festival.
In 2022 they are tour support to Pom Poko (IVW tour), play SXSW and a second headline tour in March around the release of EP 2.

So Cool

Q&A

Low Girl are...?

We are a four-piece who have polarising tastes in music. Somehow, when combined, we make pretty alright songs.

You’ve got myself
(Sarah) playing guitar badly, singing and writing songs,
Toby on keys,
Tom on drums and
Brad on bass.

We are all pretty awkward apart from Brad who makes us look even more awkward by comparison.

Who inspired you to make music in general ...and especially to the song "So Cool"?

I was obsessed with The Beatles when I was 12, and Paul McCartney in particular was the reason I started song writing.
Many years later, So Cool was inspired by the lo-fi pop-punk songs myself and Brad were listening to that summer. I think you can really hear that care-free summery sound in the song, so of course it was perfect to release it in the stone-cold depths of winter.

What is your creative process like and was it different for this song?

Insanely different! Often, I’ll write songs alone and gradually bring the rest of the band in to work on them, but this song was born out of a rehearsal.
We wrote it in 2018, and it was a totally different sound back then. I revisited it last summer, and it became a track that let each member shine and have some fun.

What can we expect from your upcoming EP in March?

You can expect both ballads and alt-pop bops! We want you to cry and we want you to dance, but not at the same time.

What do you prefer, a live gig or a studio session?

It’s hard to pick but I adore studio sessions. It feels insanely good to put all the pieces together and walk away with something you’re genuinely proud of.

What's your most useful talent besides music?

I don’t know about me, but Tom certainly does a very good Johnny Vegas impression.

How would you describe 2021 in a sentence?

Exceptionally unexpected! I think we made more progress in that year than we’ve ever really made before. Whenever we release something, I always get the jitters and assume it’s gonna flop. So, I can't emphasize enough my joy to see the last EP received so positively!

What was the first ever Pop/Rock/etc. ... song you listened to or remember on?

I have a distinct memory of listening to When I’m Sixty-Four by The Beatles. Sgt Pepper was my families CD of choice on any car journey, and I would throw a tantrum if I didn’t get to listen to that track. Not sure what 5-year-old me was relating to in particular.

Do you remember your first ever self-written song?

I do, and it pains me to recall. It was a song called London Bird. It wasn’t terrible for a first attempt, but it’s become something of a meme in my immediate family. Pray you never have to hear it.

What’s next for you?

After the way 2021 went, it’s hard to say what’s around the corner. But what I do know is that we are in a very healthy place creatively at the moment - and I’m so excited to share all the things we’ve been working on. I’m hoping our slot at SXSW will open up some other doors, and I’m hoping that we reach more people with our music.
