Nostalgic Authenticity: “Big Time” by Rogue FX and Mayah Camara

“Big Time” by Rogue FX and Mayah Camara Today, we’re opening the gates to our blog in classic style – classic '80s synth-pop, to be precise. Whenever the words ‘80s’ and ‘synth-pop’ are mentioned, Rogue FX is never far behind. Drawn to the essence of that decade, he dives deep to retrieve a flawless pearl and then showcases it in his musical shop window.  His latest track is called “Big Time,” a collaborative project with Retrowave/Nu-Soul artist Mayah Camara . The story revolves around a relationship at a crossroads, caused by the success and fame of one partner who has reached the “big time” mentioned in the title. Jealousy and insecurity take hold, but there’s a shared hope that the relationship can survive and grow.  Rogue FX cleverly packages this story in the big-city vibe of the '80s, creating an emotional counterpoint to the relationship through his astute selection of sound and rhythm – the big-time lifestyle of that era. From the start, the listener experiences the

"Golden Apple" by HVIRESS

Hana Piranha and Mishkin Fitzgerald

HVIRESS

... is the occult, musical love child of Hana Piranha and Mishkin Fitzgerald (Birdeatsbaby). The duo has been fierce friends and writing partners since touring together in 2013, where they found they had more in common than just rock music.
Both came from sheltered religious backgrounds (one Catholic, one Protestant), with a strong focus on discipline and achievement. However, despite their limited exposure to popular culture, both were drawn to rock music as an expression of their inner turmoil.
Each found solace in song-writing and in 2014, when Birdeatsbaby’s existing violinist announced her departure from the band, Hana stepped in and she and Mishkin began a musical career together that has gone from strength to strength.

Hana Piranha and Mishkin Fitzgerald (HVIRESS)
With a newfound interest in spirituality, and most particularly the occult, the pair decided they would combine their energies into a new, dark electronic project, HVIRESS
Embracing, as always, her classical roots, Hana also had a vision for the project founded in the aesthetics and culture of ancient Greek mythology.
Mishkin’s fascination with occult practices, combined with an innovative approach to music theory, only added to the band’s unusual and magikal leanings
The pair collaborated with composer and producer Garry Mitchell (Birdeatsbaby) to write their first self-titled EP, mixed by LA songwriter and producer Evan Rodaniche (Cage9). Working with long-time friend and collaborator, Scott Chalmers, master of the macabre, the duo creates visual art that lifts their music to another level.
HVIRESS is the result of two strongly-driven women intent on creating music with true purpose.

Golden Apple

"...a pop-tinged dark electro gem with a saccharine-sweet video to make your eyes cry sugar lumps...", hieß es in der Ankündigung quasi das Vorwort zum Song.
"Golden Apple" by HVIRESS, Electro Alternative Pop meets dark Art to tell you who we are and how we are.

Q&A

Hviress are...?

The Coven of the HVIRESS is a Post-Raphaelite electro witch-core duo, formed of two singers Mishkin Fitzgerald and Hana Piranha. We bonded over our classical and religious upbringings and the ability to play music with just our minds… and the rest is history.

Who inspired you to make music in general?

H: Around 1500 years ago (I was inhabiting my nineteenth human body at the time) the Goddess Hecate came to me in a dream.
I remember it so clearly, she floated out of the abyss with eyes that bore into my soul and she said, behold, I give you the dark flame, carry it well for it will empower you with great magic and creativity. Unfortunately, I woke up before she actually handed it to me, but I understood the sentiment.

The new track "Golden Apple" sounds great, what's the story behind, what was your inspiration?

M: As witches, we speak to deities from all corners of the world, but we have a particular affinity with the Greek Goddesses.
One of the most colourful chapters of Greek myth is the Judgment of Paris, where the mortal Paris is asked to choose between Aphrodite, Hera and Athena. A golden apple is given to the goddess who he deems to be the most beautiful.

Your music sounds "driven by the darkness", are you both fascinated by a"Dark World"?

H: I would say we are both very dark-souled people – we find comfort in the darkness and our dreams and power are born in the dark.
We are attracted to things that other people find uncomfortable. The music we make is a celebration of this.

The Video has this amazing Dark Electro meets Alternative Art Touch, how stressful or time intensive is it to create such a video or is it more fun?

M: Music videos are simultaneously the most fun and stressful aspect of completing a track. We love the shoot day and the final result but a lot of work goes into it.
As you can imagine, neither of us actually own anything pink, so for Golden Apple, sourcing all the props and costumes was a job we had to do from scratch!

What is your creative process like and was it different to your first release?

H: Our creative process always begins with a ritual. We light candles and summon the Goddess Athena to assist us with her divine inspiration.

What's your most useful talent besides music?

M: I can tell when my period is coming just by looking at the moon. Not sure if it's useful to anyone else but I do find it handy.

What do you prefer, a live gig or a studio session?

H: I prefer a studio session because I hate people.

Do you remember your first ever self-written song?

M: Yes, it was an etude to a beautiful tree in my childhood garden. Sadly, it passed away shortly afterwards but I didn't take it personally.

What’s next for you?

We've already got a new song and video ready for release. It stars a very important table.
