Sharl
... is a pop singer/songwriter from Melbourne, Australia. 2022 has started off strong for her with new single releases and an upcoming album: City Lights.
Her earlier music, released by a UK indie record label, was described as “pure relevance… chick-flick drops of colour accompanied with those happy beats”. “Whilst she can party like it’s going out of fashion, and would suit any sleep over, [she] also spreads her thoughts through some softer numbers” [New Reviews].
City Lights was born out of months of reflection during Melbourne’s many lockdowns. The era of indoor contemplation was a catalyst to deep dive into her passion of writing and recording original songs with new energy and evolution.
The album documents her coming-of-age journey through the ups and downs of dating and relationships against the backdrop of city life. Spanning from classic ballads to a vintage disco throwback to the heights of hyperpop and trap beats, her sound and style draws from the best of both classic and trendy elements.
Let me know
Q&A
Sharl is...?
A pop singer/songwriter from Melbourne, Australia! I am super excited to throw myself back into releasing music this year after quite some time.
Music has always been a massive part of my life since I was young, and there’s nothing I love more than songwriting and recording original music. I was fortunate enough to sign with an indie label in the past and release an album with them. However, I also followed my other life aspiration of becoming a doctor and found that it was really challenging keeping up music to the extent that I wanted during medical school and starting working life.
I mainly collaborated on projects sporadically with producers, doing toplines for EDM tracks and providing vocals for other songwriters, and essentially stopped making my own music.
With the extensive lockdowns in Melbourne, I had a lot of time to reassess what I want to do in life, and I knew I would regret it if I never released any of my own original music again. I started songwriting again and realised that I had found myself as an artist in a way I never had before. I knew I just had to record and release the album “City Lights”!
Who inspired you to make music in general?
I started playing instruments when I was 3, because my older brother was starting music lessons and I wanted to copy him! From then on, I did a huge amount of music growing up, so it’s always just been a natural component of my life rather than being inspired by anyone in particular.
The times when I haven’t been able to do music, I feel like something is missing. So for me, music is something I need to do in order to feel complete in my life.
Your track "Let me know" sounds great, what's the story behind the song, what or who was your inspiration?
The inspiration was that it was the end of 2021, and I felt really restless and impatient! I felt like I just needed to write another song before the year ended, and being in that mood brought me back to this time when I went on a few dates with someone, basically the exact scenario described in the song.
Since the song came out people have asked me “Did the person in the song ever let you know?“, and the answer is no!
I don’t even have any contact with them anymore, so I don’t think they’ll ever hear the song or know it’s about them!
What is your creative process like and what's the most time intensive part for you?
The first part is writing a song. It typically starts with an idea that comes into my mind spontaneously, either lyrics, melody or both together. I then write down as much as I can and usually finish writing it at the piano.
Although the recording sessions are quite intense, I see the songwriting and recording parts of the process as quite discrete and finite. So the most time intensive part for me in terms of being spread over a longer period of time is probably reviewing the mixes with my producer, Daniel Bohen.
I definitely get in my head about the tiniest things and start to have some kind of sound dysmorphia in every song! But going over all those details and making sure we’re happy with every aspect is absolutely worth it in the end.
What's your most useful talent besides music?
The most useful thing I can do would have to be from my medical training, so specifically resuscitation skills and airway management!
Do you remember your first ever self-written song?
Sadly I can’t remember it at all! I started writing a lot of music for fun when I was very young so I can’t recall exact details of those early pieces of music.
But I’m sure it actually would have had the same sense of melody as I have today, and probably been about whatever I felt at the time! I don’t think those aspects change much.
What’s next for you?
My album “City Lights” is being released later this year, and I’m extremely excited for this! I’m very proud of the work that went into it, I love the end result and I think it perfectly captures what I want to express as an artist. The songs are really personal to me, yet I think plenty of people will be able to relate to the lyrics on a deep level from their own experiences.
The lead single from the album is called “I Fell in Love“ and will be out on 4th March, so that’s pretty soon! I can’t wait to share it as I think it has a great sound and the story will resonate with a lot of people. It tells a story of growth and resilience through dealing with the bad side of love. There is a music video on the way for this song too which is incredibly exciting, I just filmed it recently with a great crew and it’ll be amazing to see the music expressed even further with some awesome visuals.
I’m already writing more music which will be released after the album and also working on some collaborations, so keep an eye out for those. Overall I just love what I’m doing at the moment, so I plan to keep evolving as an artist, working hard and enjoying music!
