Reach

Q&A

What's the story behind your latest song "Reach", respectively what was your inspiration?

Ian: I had this musical idea of this pulse/ beacon sound building in the verse , the timing becoming closer almost like a sonar tracking a target and getting closer, getting closer building to the chorus, reaching/searching.
I really wanted a live trip hop style drum beat, and the bass to drive the whole thing. I wasn’t 100% sure on the track - i never am after recording and mixing and listening to it a 100 times before i show it to Cam - but she loved it straight away😆

Cam: I just had this feeling that I wanted to write something about all the choices and expectations in today’s society. How this in many people can make them confused what to choose and/or what to do, and that you easily can choose not to choose anything.
In this way you can fall on the “outside “. With this music i felt like if we all choose something that means something to ourself and set goals for what is important for exactly you- you will have something to work towards and keep yourself on track and find motivation.

If you are looking back to your debut song/release "Darkness all around", what is the most significant difference between then and now (concerning songwriting, recording, creativity, …)?

Songwriting and creativity has always stayed the same - in that we try and germinate the best ideas we can and evolve them while staying true to what we want to write about and our own style.
We would like to think we have made big steps sonically in our evolution. If we were being brutally honest we probably shouldn’t have released our first album which ‘Darkness All Around’ was the first single from as it was and we probably should have spent another year getting better at production. But saying that I always loved bands that you can go back to their early stuff and its raw and you can hear how they have grown
Hopefully fans that have followed us from the start can hear that in us and appreciate the journey. We still strive to write from within and stay true to ourselves and our musical vision.

I have read something about a 4th Album, what can we expect?

Yep we are half way through writing - so far we have released ‘Hide’ which was very trip hop fused with a sprinkle of industrial beats. Again dealing with tales of our own inspired mental health struggles. ‘Apology’ was very alt rock inspired and really just a blast in the chorus - stemming from an argument between us in the studio 😆😆 - ‘ Reach will be the 3rd song from the album
So i think we are about trying to dig deeper into ourselves, keep trying to improve sonically. Stay true to ourselves and our ever evolving musical identity.

If we would ask Ian what's typical Camilla, what would be the answer?
...and of course if we would ask Camilla what's typical Ian?

Ian: typical Camilla is huge self doubt ! I have to push her to believe in herself vocally and musically. Sometimes i push too hard and that upsets her , but then she puts in her normal awesome vocal performance and she realises herself i was rightIts the friction sometimes between us that ignites the creativity and the final song.

Camilla: typical Ian will be to talk about music in the weirdest situations. He has a really creative mind and sometimes his mind has no stop button.
When he has an idea he just needs to throw it out there. Even if I’m asleep, in the shower or if are having a conversation about something totally different. Its Happened a lot that i wake up and before even a good morning he’s like “listen to this song” 😆

The way from the idea of a song to the release could be very long, what's the most time intensive part for you?

The initial spark is the hardest- we can maybe have 8-10 ideas before we find 1 we think ‘thats good’ we work on that and expand that and grow it.
After that its the mixing , as spoke earlier about our progression in the studio, were not expert mixers but we want the control and we may spend weeks on it - it becomes frustrating sometimes and running in circles. But its a part of the ‘art’ in a way. You can totally change the song in a mix.

What comes to your mind if we ask, what are your "All time Top 3 Songs"?

This is really really difficult!!

Camilla:
"the spoils" - Massive Attack
"Don't kill my vibe" -Sigrid
"Landfill" - Daughter

Ian:
"Would?" - Alice in Chains (which we covered in our own way and is a available on YouTube and all streaming platforms)
"No Reptiles" - Everything Everything
"Street Carp" - The Deftones

What’s next for you?

We are spending the next few months finishing the album, then we hope the world is back to normal after Covid and we can plan some live shows!!
