She comes in colours
Q&A
Who or what inspired you for your new release "She comes in colours"?
The song was inspired by the fluctuating feelings and the mood swings we all have to deal with when our object of desire is wildly volatile and strenuous to retain. For me “She Comes in Colours” is a song about making art and how it feels making it, but I also like to think of it as a universal story where everyone can find their own key to interpret it.
“She” can be anything you want it to be: a loved one, a substance, creative inspiration, you name it. Anything that comes and go and leaves you yearning for more.
Last time you told us, it took eons to create the right atmosphere around the song, was it the same for this one?
Not this time. The music poured out spontaneously and I knew right from the beginning it was perfect for the song. Crafting the arrangement took much longer though, but that's because I like to dive deep into the details and try to steer clear of anything “too obvious”.
The mood of the song is profound with a touch of melancholic, isn't it, or is it simply just my feeling?
I hear you. If I had to chose the main feeling expressed in the song, it would probably be “longing”. I'm really glad you can relate and I hope many more listeners will.
You are a multi instrumentalist, what's your favorite instrument when you are starting to write a new song?
Doubtlessly the guitar. You are a DIY artist, that means writing, producing, mixing, etc. is all done by yourself, what's the most time expensive part?
It takes so much work to do everything by yourself but it's greatly rewarding in so many ways. Being more a musician than a sound engineer, I spend quite some time on mixing. It doesn't come easy to me but I'm still learning and loving it more and more.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
I'm always open to collaborations. The more the merrier. If I'm daydreaming, I'd love a duet with Sharon Van Etten and a session with Midlake.
This week I watched an ad about "automated online mastering", how much do you think the Internet has changed the world of music?
My mixes have been mastered here in Copenhagen by Brian Mørk Hansen, an amazing person and a greatly skilled engineer.
I still prefer an in-person approach, especially because that sparks a spontaneous conversation that can lead somewhere unplanned; but the AI mastering thing is developing incredibly fast and it's indeed a reality.
You are from Copenhagen, how would you describe the music scene there?
There so much great music being made in Denmark. Tons of quality stuff both in english and in danish. It's just a bit harder to find it out there than let's say Berlin or London with their zillions of venues.
Last couple of years have been rather bleak for obvious reasons but things are looking up and I hope I can be a part of a sort of “renaissance” where everybody is playing together all the time.
What’s next for you?
Making better and better music, collaborating with meaningful artists and going out there and play everywhere.
The Artist: Vince Chinaski
Who would have ever imagined his ramblings would take him as far north as Scandinavia. Growing up in Rome was quite the adventure; both challenging and lots of fun being a young punk in that colossus of a city, overflowing with heritage, wacky traffic and nuns. His ramshackle Vespa was always in need of repairs, as was the gear of the indie bands he founded or joined up (i.e. Radiobuzz, Technicolor, Mathilda Mothers).
In the mid '00s Berlin called and he answered. Embraced the ultimate european frontier, Vince joined more bands (The Man No. 9 / Haute Areal, The Innits / Sunday Service Records), Zürich-based Division Kent / Sony BMG), toured extensively across Europe, produced and DJed (how can you not?) as Tanzfaster and kicked off his solo project Pocket Sea Change. Then one night, after playing a gig, he stumbled upon the big love. Just like that. She snatched his heart and took him to Copenhagen where he started writing and producing the body of work that is Vince Chinaski.
