Spirit of the Times
Thanks for your time!
Q&A
Gabrielle Ornate is...?
Gabrielle Ornate is a bohemian queen who loves writing indie pop rock tunes for music lovers of the modern world! I love using ethereal lyrics and mystical themes to describe the inner workings of my mind. My tracks are laced with an empowered edge as walls of epic synthesisers are adorned with riffing guitar and bass, in a kaleidoscopic sound world.
Who inspired you to make music in general ...and especially to your song "Spirit of the Times"?
I’ve always loved singing and writing songs, even when I was a toddler in the buggy. My grandma has old cassettes of me singing to myself and coming up with original melodies. I also used to mess around on her upright piano, thinking I was so avant-garde at the time!
When I was growing up, a lot of the music I consumed was in my dad’s car going on long drives from Greater London into the city.
My favourite CDs were definitely the Beatles’ albums. I resonated with the Beatles back then (even before I properly became a musician). Something about their catchy and anthemic vocal melodies, relatable lyrics and charming instrumental ear worms pulled me in from the year dot!
"Spirit of the Times" creates a great rock atmosphere, do you remember your first Rock song you listened to?
Thanks so much, I’m glad you think so :)
The first rock song I remember listening to that left an impact on me was ‘Paranoid Android’ by Radiohead. I’ve always loved the balance between heaviness, eerie minor intervals and ghostly backing vocals. The end section, especially, speaks to me.
What is your creative process like?
My creative process varies depending on what I’m feeling in the moment. My usual technique is to come up with a riff or chord progression on the piano and jam a vocal melody over the top.
However, I sometimes come up with random melodies in my head when I’m going about my day or even in my sleep! I also like writing songs from poems or poetic phrases I’ve written in advance. The list goes on!
What's your most useful talent besides music?
I’m a bit of a perfectionist, which can sometimes be challenging mentally, however this trait enables me to be an amazing organiser. Whether it’s enacting a successful release campaign, planning to put on a gig, or just remembering to pack everything I need for a holiday, I find a way to remember it all!
How would you describe 2021 in a sentence?
Empowering myself from unhealthy patterns and relationships, and focusing on enacting my true purpose.
What do you prefer, a live gig or a studio session?
I absolutely love both but, for me, nothing beats transforming an idea into a fully fleshed out production - I’m obsessed with shaping sounds and constructing arrangement parts, so a studio session is an environment you can’t take me away from!
Do you remember your first ever self-written song?
I still have my old songwriting book from when I was around 8 and, funnily enough, I’ve taken bits of melodies from some of those songs and incorporated them into my current repertoire. You can’t knock a decent melody!
Two very old songs of mine come to mind: one’s called ‘Breathe’ and the other is called ‘With Your Feet Off The Ground’ - looking back, the lyrics are very cringey but the melodies are quite catchy. I actually ended up redrafting ‘Breathe’ last year and turning it into an up-to-date track.
What’s next for you?
Currently, I’m working on the promotional campaign for ‘Spirit of the Times’ but I’m also planning the music video for it, which will comprise a choreographed dance routine filmed in an industrial warehouse.
Music-wise, I’m also working on the production of my following single ‘Free Falling’ which is well in the works.
I plan to carry on releasing a steady stream of singles and eventually this will evolve into the release of an EP and/or album. Amping it up one song at a time - watch this space!
