Please Insert Coin: ‘Games’ by The Octopus Division

‘Games’ by The Octopus Division If you love the 80s and don't know Matt Muncie (aka The Octopus Division), you've definitely missed something. But as it's never too late for good music, you can catch up on what you've missed anytime and almost anywhere.  The Octopus Division's latest work is called ‘Games’ and once again represents the decade of neon lights perfectly. The major sequences are classically chosen, and you'll be hooked from the start. Back in the world of arcade games, the song becomes an intense journey of self-discovery, describing personal growth. Timelessness and shared experiences emphasize the importance of interpersonal bonds. ‘Games’ creates a dreamy atmosphere that allows you to immerse yourself in another world and makes you think about the future - all because you pressed the start button.  The entire production clearly bears Matt's signature, with classic drums, synth arrangements, and above all, the usual concise vocal part, which...

Mirrors

"The south coast of England" nennt er seine Heimat, er, das ist Richard Yot, seines Zeichens Visual Artist, Author und Singer&Songwriter. Eine großartige künstlerische Konstellation die sich natürlich
in seinem musikalischen Schaffen bemerkbar macht.
"...this is the "hall of mirrors in your mind..."
"Mirrors" by Richard Yot, experimental and edgy sounds lost in eternity!

Q&A

Richard Yot is...?

I am a visual artist by trade, but I also write books and music in my spare time. I'm interested in a wide variety of things and I uses my time carefully to allow me to follow all of my interests.

Who inspired you to make music in general?

There are too many to mention, but my main inspiration comes from dream pop, shoegaze, and indie artists from the 80s and 90s
Galaxie 500, My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus And Mary Chain. I like the blend of simple musical structures (3 chord songs, catchy melodies) with experimental and edgy sounds - a form that was invented by the Velvet Underground and expanded on by these bands.

What's the story behind "Mirrors", respectively what or who was your inspiration?

"Mirrors" is about alcoholism, specifically the self-delusion that alcoholics often suffer from (this is the "hall of mirrors in your mind").
I know about this first-hand from someone close to me, but the idea was in fact triggered when reading about a well-known musician who had refused help with his drinking problem.

The fifth album is currently in process, what can we expect?

Catchy songs with an edgy vibe, with a mixture of guitars and synthesizers.

If you compare your songs from your first album to now, what's the most significant difference concerning songwriting/production/ etc. ?

Since the first album everything has changed, and improved beyond recognition. I've written and produced one hundred songs along the way which has helped me to develop every aspect of songwriting and production. The best way to learn something is by doing it.

What's the hardest part to be an Indie artist in your opinion?

Reaching people, and finding new fans for sure. That really is the only purpose of a record label these days: to provide marketing muscle
Everything else can be done so cheaply and easily now, from recording to distribution, that the paradigm has completely shifted from what it was twenty years ago.
You no longer need $60,000 to make an album, you can do it at home with a laptop. I actually use an iPad to record and mix my music - that's all you need, along with an audio interface, a microphone, and maybe a guitar.
This means you no longer need a label to record, produce and distribute your music, you can do it all very cheaply yourself. The only thing a label can help with is marketing, but of course that is still very important, and it's the one thing that is difficult for indie artists to do by themselves.

What's your most useful talent besides music?

Drawing and design. I also enjoy writing.

What’s next for you?

I'm happy to keep doing what I'm doing. I love writing music and I love the fact that I can do this without needing someone's permission, or a budget.
