"Playboy Driver" by 9 o’clock Nasty

9 o’clock Nasty

9 o’clock Nasty

... formed in 2021 from the ruined fragments and broken dreams of other bands that went before. They are the world’s first Anti-Ga group, left-field, eager to please and driven to delight and perplex in equal measure. They narrate their grinding creative process from www.9nasty.com and are probably going to play at a venue near you one day. They are based in Leicester, UK.
"We are 9 o'clock Nasty. We emerged glistening from the plague pits of Leicester. We play with glitter and we take no prisoners. Relentless and yet full of love we take a side eyed look at the world and punish it with driving beats and mild sarcasm."

Playboy Driver

"If your life could be this good, would you die for it?", die Frage, welche im Mittelpunkt der neuen 9 o’clock Nasty Single steht, welche rechtzeitig vor ein paar Tagen, zum Formula 1 Auftakt, erschien.

Q&A

What's the story behind your latest song "Playboy Driver", respectively what was your inspiration?

9 o’clock Nasty
Sometimes you just get an itch. An ear worm that you’ve played a couple of times and you know will work into a song “one day.” Then for no particular reason Ted just started shouting Playboy Driver over the chorus riff and we all went AHA.
The lyric was born literally as a series of text messages over the day that followed - we ended up with 70 or 80 phrases and cut it down and down until we had the song. The song was born that night in a mad frenzy, everything being thrown into the mix until it was a complete mess.
A brilliant little song trapped under the wreckage of our process. That was when our producer Mr Thumbs stepped in and cut the song right back, threw out all the things that didn’t contribute and found the heart of it. It’s the first time we’ve worked with someone outside the band and it was a chance to perhaps take our work to the next level.
We’ve always loved Formula 1, even though it is gradually becoming all about technology rather than insanity, and we channeled all of our 1970s Grand Prix fantasies into the song.

If you are looking back to "Dank (EP)", what is the most significant difference between then and now?

Well if anyone takes time to look up that EP we’d suggest they listen to King of Hackney in particular. That was recorded on analogue tape and edited with a razor blade. It was raw and was largely improvised on top of a very rough demo that Ted made. But we loved it. Love it. With passion. We probably should not have released that song then. Let’s Talk About Your Boyfriend was the finished piece and should have been a single. King of Hackney was a sketch.
6 months later Sydd came up with a killer drum loop and we took the best bits of King of Hackney and used everything we’d learned, and a digital process to rebuild it. It ended as a new song, and we made King Thing. It is the song that was always there trying to get out and probably the purest expression so far of what we are trying to create. We had the confidence and clarity, and willingness to strip things bare, to make the song we wanted.
Same thing with the first track, Gammon v Pilgrim. That was a great sketch, but if you listen to our version of Sexy Back you can hear the parts of Gammon v Pilgrim that we sharpened and crafted.
So the most significant difference is that we’ve got much better at working things through. Of taking the raw product and refining it. Although our music probably sounds more “rough” now that is because we’ve chosen to make it that way.

When do you say/decide that a song is ready for a release?

We’ve got a lot better at that. We currently have nine great songs that are maybe one night’s work from completion. But we need the right moment. We all have strong opinions, and once all three of us feel it is done, it is done, but not until then.

When can we see you live on stage, are there any plans for a tour or gigs?

We’ve been saying “sometime this year” for a while now. Now that is actually turning into a real plan and we will begin serious rehearsals, hopefully with Mr Thumbs joining us as a second guitarist.
We’ve decided to miss out the whole process of playing local gigs and go straight into a world tour! We’ll announce dates soon, for Summer 2022, and the plan is to stream and release media recorded at the events which of course will allow us to reach far more people than those that happens to live near the cities we choose.
We always want to hear from promoters that want to host a freak show.

Concerning Social Media, is it fun or more a necessary evil?

9 o’clock Nasty
For an independent artist it is potentially a game changer. Rather than relying on other people to reach potential audience you have the tools to engage people directly. That is wonderful. We have found bands we love that way. Try following the hashtag #newindie to find some of them.
But. There is always a downside. Social media and streaming continue the trend for the value of creative content to continue falling to zero. We make more money selling t shirts than we do from music. Which is insane as we spend about an hour designing a t shirt, and about a week writing a song!
It is probably too simple to blame social media for that, it is a trend that has grown over time. They are good t shirts though. We probably don’t use social media in the best way, and we have got ourselves into trouble a few times. But that is probably why people follow us!

What are your talents besides music?

Well Sydd is qualified to handle the most dangerous chemicals on earth. He has certificates to prove it. Pete can take a piece of wood and make literally anything from it, provided it is basically a stick. Ted makes a great cup of tea and is a world class heckler at gigs.

At this moment, what are your "All time Top 3 Songs"?

For Sydd it would be a different Led Zeppelin song every day,
for Pete anything by the Ramones and
for Ted, Garbageman by the Cramps.

There is absolutely no way the band could agree a combined top three. If we even started that conversation there would be murder.

What’s next for you?

We’ve really had to think hard about that. We have several, very different, things ready to release. We’ve chosen an absolute out and out pop song called Food on the Floor for April.
It is a lot of fun and is the happiest song about a fight at a funeral ever written. We are working towards a second LP called “By All Means Necessary” later in the year.
