1 Big 1
"...The lyrics are based on a book by Russell Hoban called, ‘Riddley Walker’...", ließen sie uns wissen.
Q&A
Vex Message are...?
Derek, Hopey and Sam. Hopey and I both grew up in Berwick upon Tweed, Sam in Sheffield, but we all now live in Lancaster.
I (Derek) have released records in bands Eastern Lane and The Agitator. Hopey’s been in a few different bands, notably The Briganties, and Sam plays in a few jazz bands, most recently Kader.
Who inspired you to make music in general?
Pavarotti, The Cheeky Girls and Mark E Smith.
What's the story behind "1 Big 1", respectively what or who was your inspiration?
The lyrics are based on a book by Russell Hoban called, ‘Riddley Walker’. It’s a pretty mind-bending piece of literature in which language and society have broken down in a post-apocalyptic version of Kent.
It features loads of little folk songs that Riddley sings as he wanders around. I just wanted to pay homage to the book really, so I guess that was the inspiration.
From the idea of a song to a final version, is it straightforward or more a creative "zig-zag-course"?
We wrote all the songs on our album by a process of the three of us adding ideas into a Dropbox folder and then we’d each tinker around adding bits.
So, I suppose by osmosis it’s a pretty zig-zag way of doing things. Each song came about in a different way, but with this one Hopey basically wrote all the music and Sam and I just added drums and vocals respectively.
As a band, I guess, you prefer to play live, or are you one of those bands who loves to be in the studio?
Well, over the last couple of years, for obvious reasons, we’ve been a lot more focussed on writing and recording, but we’ll get out there live again at some point.
Concerning Social Media, is it fun or more a necessary evil?
I’d be inclined to say the latter, but we try to keep it light-hearted. We’re fully expecting to go viral any day now. Although, it’s probably more likely to be with the ‘rona.
You are from Lancaster, are there any plans for some gigs there?
None in the immediate pipeline, but as I said earlier, we’ll get out again at some point.
What’s next for you?
Our album is all recorded and ready to go, so we’re working towards getting that out into the world over the summer.
