Neil Armstrong’s ‘In the Borderlands’: A Nostalgic Journey Through Love and Loss

“In the Borderlands” by Neil Armstrong Neil Armstrong steps onto our blog stage for the first time as an artist. His music pays tribute to the icons of the 80s, including The Cure, Tears For Fears, Pet Shop Boys, and Howard Jones. Oscillating between the realms of Synth-Pop/Rock and New Wave, Armstrong’s transnational work, fluctuating between Spain and Scotland, is expressed in his latest piece, “In the Borderlands.” The song takes us on an introspective journey through the nuances of human relationships, unfolding the complexity of interpersonal dynamics . It exposes these nuances on the operating table of music, bringing them to life with a nostalgic touch reminiscent of the 80s, thereby endowing the work with a soul. The arrangement, inspired by the musical giants of that era, is a testament to Armstrong’s exceptional talent for composing and arranging songs. Who inspired you to make music in general?

I’m not really sure. It started so long ago. I think I was born with it cause I don’t remember ever wanting to make music. It just happened.

When did you decide to start working on this extraordinary Album, what was the crucial point?

It's a project that I’ve been thinking of for a while. And when Covid 19 appeared, it seemed like the time to get serious about this project.

How would you describe your Album "Classics unleashed" in some sentences?

I guess the best way to describe my album "Classics Unleashed" is this way: What if these composers were alive today -- how would they compose using today's digital instruments.
I wanted to avoid re-creating these classics by jazzing them up or hip hop -- or changing the styles but rather, changing the flavor of the sounds.
And with so much ear candy to play with I felt like a kid in a candy shop. The sounds you can create are infinite! Like having a million instruments to play with.

Is there a chance to see you somewhen/somewhere live with the album?

Yes, there is -- if someone wants to set up a tour. It would be a challenge to re-create but it would sound AWESOME in a concert setting.

What are your "All time Top 3 Songs", right now, in this second?

That’s a hard question always. I still can’t decide if I like the color blue more than green. It's all too subjective.

What’s next for you?

I do have another exciting project coming up. It will complement Classics Unleashed. A project that inspired Emerson, Lake, and Palmer.
