Neil Armstrong’s ‘In the Borderlands’: A Nostalgic Journey Through Love and Loss

“In the Borderlands” by Neil Armstrong Neil Armstrong steps onto our blog stage for the first time as an artist. His music pays tribute to the icons of the 80s, including The Cure, Tears For Fears, Pet Shop Boys, and Howard Jones. Oscillating between the realms of Synth-Pop/Rock and New Wave, Armstrong’s transnational work, fluctuating between Spain and Scotland, is expressed in his latest piece, “In the Borderlands.” The song takes us on an introspective journey through the nuances of human relationships, unfolding the complexity of interpersonal dynamics . It exposes these nuances on the operating table of music, bringing them to life with a nostalgic touch reminiscent of the 80s, thereby endowing the work with a soul. The arrangement, inspired by the musical giants of that era, is a testament to Armstrong’s exceptional talent for composing and arranging songs. Every note, every melody in “In the Borderlands” is carefully chosen to tell a story of love: its loss and rediscovery, wit

Four brilliant misfits from the North: The Avelons & "Setting Sons"

The Avelons

The Avelons

After about half a decade of mucking about, Newcastle based band The Avelons have decided the time is now to pull their fingers out. Formed in their local pub by Jack Oldham and James Thompson, the pair quickly swooped in to sign Aaron Morrell. Years later, having discovered their sound, the trio finally found the missing piece to the puzzle in the form of Darlington born drummer, Dylan Sharp.

The Avelons are ..?

We are 4 misfits hailing from Newcastle, all clamming to play our music in front of as many people as physically possibleJacks the frontman. Aarons the dreamer. James does the Admin. Dylan puts snare drums through.

Who inspired you to make music in general?

Decades of Brits with bad teeth and dodgy haircuts. Also our singer Jack’s dad. Told him playing guitar was too hard. “You’ll never be able to do that Jack!”  … THANKS GARY!

Your latest release "Setting Sons" sounds fantastic, what's the story behind?

We think it’s a relatable tale of love, loss and coming back from it all.

What do you think was the last "big thing'' in the music industry?

Giving a s**t is definitely back in!

Social Media, is it fun or is it more in the direction of "OMG"?

Fortunately the band's girlfriends are savvy enough to run ours…. Grandad of the band Jack (26) can’t work it.

What was the last song where you turned up the volume?

Local lass Lizzie Esau just put out a single called ‘The Enemy’. Absolute screamer.

You are from Newcastle upon Tyne, how would you describe the music scene there?

Suppose we just touched on that. If we had to summarise in 3 words we’d say… Strong… Deep… Good-looking x

Do your fans have the chance to see you somewhere live on stage?

We’re actually supporting a band called Fight Milk at Bobiks 25th June. We are back at Bobiks with our own headline show 13th August. Unfortunately for you beautiful people who don’t have tickets it's already SOLD OUT
You’ll have to climb in through the windows. Fear not though, we have something big planned for December….

What’s next for you?

We’ve actually been into Motorhouse recording studios over Sunderland way with another top North East talent Elizabeth Liddle, hopefully we will be sharing some bits from that with you very soon.
Aside from the above mentioned gigs we’ve already got another single ready for release. First things first though, we need to find Aaron a pair of jeans that fit.
