‘The Journey’ - The Octopus Division

‘The Journey’ - The Octopus Division In ‘The Journey,’ a sonic mosaic unfolds that—permeated by neon-soaked synth pads and a melody that feels like memory—is less a song than a spiritual compass. The time that relentlessly pursues us, according to ‘Time keeps chasing us every day’, is not portrayed as an enemy, but as a constant touchstone that we face with our heads held high: ‘ We won't let the rain wash us away’ . Photography, here metaphorically as a key to the past, opens doors to moments that seem long gone but live on within us. The chorus – a kind of collective mantra – describes not just a journey, but an intertwining of stories that support each other. The garden in which hopes take root becomes a symbol of what must be nurtured in order to flourish. And when ‘ our songs have lost a note or two ’, it is not a flaw, but proof of lived depth. A song that is not meant to be heard, but to be lived through – like a familiar glance at an old photo album by candlelight. b...

"Tell them I'm insane" by Gentry Blue

Gentry Blue

Gentry Blue
Few bands advertise themselves as a group that takes no prisoners, but that’s exactly what Gentry Blue does-- creating a passionate, raw sound involving pure classic-inspired psychedelic and progressive rock.
Comprised of Lydia Gentry on vocals and electric violin, Brendan DeBonis on guitar, Will Gibson on bass, and Kaleb Kinyon on drums, Gentry Blue stay true to their roots as they seek to reflect the rock and roll aesthetics of this constantly changing world.
Bringing their passion for music from the class to the stage, Gentry Blue, first called Gentry, was formed in late 2018 at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Gentry Blue are ...?

Gentry Blue is a psychedelic prog-rock band from Nashville, TN, USA, made up of four members: Lydia Gentry (vocals, electric violin), Brendan DeBonis (guitar), Will Gibson (bass), and Kaleb Kinyon (drums).

Who inspired you to make music in general?

There are many people who inspire us to make music, and it's easy to say that it can be a daily occurrence for us. Some artists include Rush, Janis Joplin, Foo Fighters, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd.
We all have many people in our own lives such as our parents and music teachers that have supported us along the way to help us make music and we are all so eternally grateful for that!

What's the story behind your latest release "Tell them I'm insane", what or who was your inspiration, respectively?

Tell Them I'm Insane had quite an interesting upbringing musically. Our guitarist, Brendan DeBonis, was taking a lyric-writing class and had to first write a narrative based on a newspaper clipping about a woman who murdered her family and was deemed clinically insane.
He then had to structure it lyrically and then wrote music to it. The song then took a more villainous approach as the woman has a larger plan that the audience doesn't know... but maybe we need another song in the form of a sequel to give the reasons why she did it?

How would you describe your creative process?

Our creative process really is different each time. Sometimes one of us will create a riff or melody line, or sometimes bring forward a full sheet of lyrics
Sometimes we'll then have a jam session based on it or one of us will entirely write a song by themselves, then bring it forth. It really depends!

I guess, as a band you prefer the stage or are you one of those bands who love to be in the studio?

We are absolutely a stage band and we love to define ourselves by that. There is a specific kind of energy you can't replace or find anywhere else except live performance. However, we always have a good time in the studio and love tinkering with our recordings.

What are your "All time Top 3 Songs", right now, in this second?

I'm not sure I could speak for everyone (this is Lydia answering this one!) but at least for me:
"Free" by Florence + the Machine,
"Joga" by Bjork, and
"Working Them Angels" by Rush.
I've been in a folk mood recently.

What’s next for you?

So many things! But we are just tailing off the release of our latest single Tell Them I'm Insane and we have been surprised by the moderate amount of success it's received.
We're releasing a live-in-the-studio EP in early fall, then several other singles, and we just started writing for an album!
