Found Instruments
... is a home recording project by singer/songwriter Jack Joseph. Specialising in a unique form of wonky psychedelia and lo-fi dream-pop, the project has produced a handful of well received singles and been featured on BBC Introducing.
Found Instruments is ...?
Just me, Jack Joseph, although my buddy Joe Reeves has mixed all the tracks I’ve put out so far so he’s a big part of how the tunes sound.
How did you get into music?
That’s a big question. As long as I can remember music has effected me in a profound way I’m not sure I can totally explain. For better or worse, it’s what I’m thinking about almost all the time. There’s magic in recorded sound that’s always fascinated me and I wanted to see if I could do it myself.
My Dad was a big influence on my musical taste and got me into Neil Young and the Beach Boys both of which are still a huge inspiration for me.
I played drums first and was in bands when I was a teenager, then I started playing guitar around the time I got more interested in songwriting and recording I guess in my late teens and I’ve been trying to do it ever since!
Your latest release "You've got a lot to learn" creates that Lofi Indie Folk charme with a Retro touch, what was your inspiration, what's the story behind the song?
This track is definitely inspired by Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, sonically at least. Lyrically I was thinking about giving advice to a grown up child or maybe even my younger self. It’s about becoming a parent and realising you still have no idea what you’re doing yourself.
What was/is in your opinion the last "big bang" in music history?
I think we’re in a bit of a home recording golden era, it’s amazing someone like Billy Eilish can have that kind of success with recordings she made in a bedroom. Obviously not everyone is fortunate enough to have access to a laptop or computer but I think it’s more accessible than ever before in a lot ways and that’s exciting.
You are from Walton-on-Thames, how would you describe the music scene there?
I don’t think there is one! Or if there is I’m not aware of it. There is a great band called Peagypt I found when we were on the same BBC Introducing show, who it turns out are local but I’ve not met them in person. Maybe I should reach out?
Is there a chance to see you somewhen/somewhere live on stage?
I have quiet aspirations to play some shows in the future and have thought about how I might approach it. To be honest though, no one’s asked! If they do, I’ll figure out a way to do it.
What’s next for you?
I want to do an EP or maybe even a full length next. Then some gigs maybe!
