Neil Armstrong’s ‘In the Borderlands’: A Nostalgic Journey Through Love and Loss

“In the Borderlands” by Neil Armstrong Neil Armstrong steps onto our blog stage for the first time as an artist. His music pays tribute to the icons of the 80s, including The Cure, Tears For Fears, Pet Shop Boys, and Howard Jones. Oscillating between the realms of Synth-Pop/Rock and New Wave, Armstrong’s transnational work, fluctuating between Spain and Scotland, is expressed in his latest piece, “In the Borderlands.” The song takes us on an introspective journey through the nuances of human relationships, unfolding the complexity of interpersonal dynamics . It exposes these nuances on the operating table of music, bringing them to life with a nostalgic touch reminiscent of the 80s, thereby endowing the work with a soul. The arrangement, inspired by the musical giants of that era, is a testament to Armstrong’s exceptional talent for composing and arranging songs. Every note, every melody in “In the Borderlands” is carefully chosen to tell a story of love: its loss and rediscovery, wit

How did you get into music?

I got into music during lockdown when covid first started. I just decided to study and learn the Daw everyday until I could create music to my liking! It's an ongoing process and that's the fun part about it. I enjoy learning new things everyday!

"Cryptic [K]night" is a great mixture of Electro meets Psychedelic Dance, what's the story behind?

I just wanted to make a song that was nice and easy to listen to at most times of the day. It's personally a song that puts me in a joyous-feel good mood. So if I could brighten somedays day a little, that would be great :)

How would you describe your creative process and how much time do you spend to find the right sounds?

I use my keyboard, synths, drum pad, guitars, and vocals as an instrument in this song. It can take quite a while finding the right sounds/instruments so I like to set deadlines for myself or I could work forever tweaking and mixing the track.

As a producer, how important is in your opinion the Mixing and the Mastering of a song and what are the typical problems?

Mixing and Mastering is definitely the time consuming part. I definitely spend the most time mixing my track until I think it's up to par for what I can achieve at this point in time.
I think production is just as important and if I already have a good mix, then mastering isn't too bad. My problem is just finding time to continue my education and making it a priority as much as I can.
