Neil Armstrong’s ‘In the Borderlands’: A Nostalgic Journey Through Love and Loss

“In the Borderlands” by Neil Armstrong Neil Armstrong steps onto our blog stage for the first time as an artist. His music pays tribute to the icons of the 80s, including The Cure, Tears For Fears, Pet Shop Boys, and Howard Jones. Oscillating between the realms of Synth-Pop/Rock and New Wave, Armstrong’s transnational work, fluctuating between Spain and Scotland, is expressed in his latest piece, “In the Borderlands.” The song takes us on an introspective journey through the nuances of human relationships, unfolding the complexity of interpersonal dynamics . It exposes these nuances on the operating table of music, bringing them to life with a nostalgic touch reminiscent of the 80s, thereby endowing the work with a soul. The arrangement, inspired by the musical giants of that era, is a testament to Armstrong’s exceptional talent for composing and arranging songs. Every note, every melody in “In the Borderlands” is carefully chosen to tell a story of love: its loss and rediscovery, wit

Your Album has been released, what can your fans expect from?

Yes! I can't wait to get feedback on the album. Trying to be objective, I think audiences can listen to the album as an atmospheric journey and raw sound material. There are 80' 90' borrowings but I think it's a current album and nourished by a lots of influences.

What's your favorite track on the Album and why?

I think my favorite track of the album is « All This To Death ». Because it's a track that illustrates well my musical state of mind.
I would like to go more towards this kind of sound. "All This To Death" is current in the lyrics, industrial in the sound and martial in the energy.

Which song caused the most troubles or consumed the most time to finish it?

Kämpfer, Poltergeist
Definitely "Der Nachtvogel", I was not sure of the structure of the track and in the end I find that this track has the advantage of being more open to the dancefloor. I got out of my usual zone, notably by playing with melodic structures with the arpegiator of the synths.
I was also happy that someone took over the post production (mixing), it allowed me to take a step back from the track and re- discover it.

What was in your opinion the last big surprise in music history?

I was strongly struck by the career of Amy Winehouse. It inspires me and touches me a lot. I think we have witnessed a real historical phenomenon which has inspired many musicians the world, especially with the soul electronic r&b wave in 2010 decade.

What would be your favorite location for a live gig?

France, EBM, Poltergeist
My dream is to perform on the Glastonbury pyramid one day! But I think playing in the Icelandic mountains like Sigur Rós band would be a wonderful life project=)

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

I would like to collaborate with Mark Ronson one day or Baxter Dury, or both at the same time! I am really impressed by their work and it inspires me a lot in my way of producing.

...and last but not least what comes next?

The KÄMPFER TOUR will soon start in France and I hope to export it internationally very soon;)
