Neil Armstrong’s ‘In the Borderlands’: A Nostalgic Journey Through Love and Loss

“In the Borderlands” by Neil Armstrong Neil Armstrong steps onto our blog stage for the first time as an artist. His music pays tribute to the icons of the 80s, including The Cure, Tears For Fears, Pet Shop Boys, and Howard Jones. Oscillating between the realms of Synth-Pop/Rock and New Wave, Armstrong’s transnational work, fluctuating between Spain and Scotland, is expressed in his latest piece, “In the Borderlands.” The song takes us on an introspective journey through the nuances of human relationships, unfolding the complexity of interpersonal dynamics . It exposes these nuances on the operating table of music, bringing them to life with a nostalgic touch reminiscent of the 80s, thereby endowing the work with a soul. The arrangement, inspired by the musical giants of that era, is a testament to Armstrong’s exceptional talent for composing and arranging songs. Every note, every melody in “In the Borderlands” is carefully chosen to tell a story of love: its loss and rediscovery, wit

After "Ireland Song" and "Take me to the coast", definitely another impressive release, what is the story behind "Whispers from the wind", the inspiration respectively?

That’s really lovely to hear, thank you. This one meant a lot to me. I’ve been waiting to release it. It’s about embracing the quiet, beautiful moments in natureand the joy of slowing down and doing nothing.
Or what some people would call nothing. I wrote it in the middle of lockdown trying to focus on finding happiness in the “small forgotten things”, and lulls listeners into a calm atmosphere, telling them “don’t go, just slow down.”

Concerning songwriting, what inspires you more... the people around you or issues that affect the world?

I think, wow, that’s a good one… I probably write more about issues affecting the world, but it’s definitely based on my experiences and the people around me. Like, this song comes is about how there’s so much pressure these days for people to do, post, buy, and ‘grind’... this song gives people a chance to slow down.
In a world moving so fast, most of us just need to realize we may actually be happier if we unplug and stop for a moment...

What's the hardest part in your opinion for an Indie Artist?

That’s an excellent question, actually, I was just talking to someone about this. The hardest thing is sometimes as an indie artist, I feel like I’m just shouting out into this digital void.
Spewing information and heartfelt creative stuff out, and there’s very little in person contact. Also making music and the low cash back on the investments is tough. I hope to see that money back soon, though, as I recently started gigging more, which has been great!

Let us know a song you can't listen to anymore although it was a favorite one?

I cannot stop listening to Flyte, specially their new album, “The loved ones” I love them, and I listen to that new album on repeat, but there’s one song I listened to far too much. Haha.
Its’s their cover of “Marry Me Archie” by Alvvays. Ironically it’s the one that got me into them, but now I can’t stand it. And I’ve discovered all the other songs which have such layered, beautifully simple (and complex) songs…
Like, this album is a breakup album, but there’s something so beautifully heartfelt about the songs that makes me so happy? But I think that’s so funny how that song is the one that got me into that album, and now I am just so sick of hearing it, even though it’s absolutely beautiful, eclectic, and laden with wonderful vocal harmonies.

What was the last "Big Bang" in music history for you?

That’s a wild question. For me, probably, listening to the Beatles in my dad’s car. He had their “1: Greatest Hits” album in his car, I don’t remember when he got it… I think I just thought it had always been there. But there’s something about those songs… they clicked in my brain how much I loved music, and singing with him, made me really lock in a love of music.

What’s next for you?

I’m so excited. I’m working on demos for my first album. I said to myself, two years ago, I’m going to release three singles, and after that, I’m going to see how I feel, and if I still enjoy releasing music, I’ll do an album. And here we are, two weeks ago, I released my third song, and the video for it last week. It’s surreal.
Writing music for me has become an absolute messy, beautiful joy. And I really look forward to putting that together. Also I am doing some feature spots in Dublin in August and September! Looking forward to those! Some things are taking off!
