Technoesque Poesie: "Stern" by Jioni , ENNA

... is a duo from Los Angeles comprised of Lauren Pardini & Danny Sternbaum. Straddling synth-pop and synthwave, Noisey best describes them noting "the duo crafts infectious sing-alongs that will certainly keep you company on those nights when you're less sober than usual." The band cites heavy influences in films such as Bladerunner and Drive, as well as the early French Touch sound. After a 5 year hiatus, they plan to continue to release music in 2022.

Back after 5 years, how does it feel?

We’re very happy to be releasing music and to connect with our fans again. Really, we’re just enjoying the process of making music together again.

What's the story behind your latest release "Van Gogh”?

Van Gogh deals with accepting how much relationships have changed in the past 2.5 years. A lot of our friends moved out of LA during the lockdown or changed paths in life and it meant having to make new friends or let go of old ones.
The Van Gogh line in the song is about driving to this amazing exhibit in Santa Barbara just as a form of release in the midst of it all.

If you take a look back, what would say is the big difference to your first release in 2014?

We’ve definitely got a different perspective than we did back in 2014. Our attitude towards making music has evolved - and we know first and foremost, we need to have fun doing this. There was a lot of pressure when we were first putting out songs to make sure everything was “perfect” - and that may have driven us a little crazy at times. Now, it’s just about making sure the song hits the spot for us… and we just roll with it.

What do you prefer ... stage or studio?

Danny: being in the studio is so natural to me and I love crafting new ideas and songs, but I 100% miss the feeling of performing in front of a live audience. If I could only choose one, I’d choose the studio.

Lauren: I'd choose the stage and then I'd long for the studio haha

What do you think was the last big turning point in music?

Danny: I think probably late 2000’s, when new independent artists could really finally establish themselves without the need of major or even indie labels.
Music blogs, streaming services, and social media all helped minimize the control the labels had over the industry. So much good music (and a lot of bad too!) came out as a result.

Lauren: Tiktok! It changed the structure of songs in infinite ways.

Right now, in this second .... what are your Top 3 Songs?

Danny
“Lucky Now” - Ryan Adams,
 “Too Late” - Washed Out,
“Albatross” - Fleetwood Mac

Lauren
'bizcochito" -Rosalia (obsessed with the tik toks & her live performance vids of it),
"edge girl"- sindy,
"golden years"- david bowie

What's next for you or do we have to wait another 5 years?

We’re working on more songs right now and will continue putting out new music. Maybe we’ll release a music video or two, as well.
