Nomenklatür
... was born after the meeting of Olivier Brucker and Olivier Rossi, two militants of the French underground techno scene during a party in Ostgut Berlin, actually knows as Berghain. Since 2005 , they have been creating a unique fusion of deep techno and electro music by using half modular and analog synthesizers, software, and homemade modules.
Nomenklatür are ...?
We both are kids of the underground Rave scene, we met in Berlin in 2000 and started producing music together in 2005. Olivier Brucker is influenced by EBM and industrial music scene, and Olivier Rossi by the techno music movement. We owned a label, ELEKTROFON, until 2009. We have produced 3 albums, many singles and remixes.
We are passionate about synths, from all periods. We like to combine all sorts of technologies in a coherent whole, conceived to be the most inspiring possible. Our machines are like colours to us, like a painter.
Every synth has its own signature and can fit or not in a track. It’s amazing to see the inspiration coming from some machines, helping us building a track from scratches, like a lego game. Almost every time we start from a blank page, every track is a new adventure starting from zero.
« When the wind blows » has this deep dark underground charme, what was your inspiration?
For the eponym track “When The Wind Blows”, we first picked samples in our vinyl’s collection, to find an atmosphere and some textures. That’s also how we found the lead, which is a saturated guitar that brought the idea of the baseline. Since we had done many tracks with ODGE before this EP, we wanted her voice on this one too.
The arrangements are minimalist enough to let her room for inspiration, and sing a melody on it. For the lyrics, ODGE was inspired by these dystopian novel such as Philip K Dicks’s Or Retro futurist atmospheres such as this in the movie Blade Runner. It expresses a nearly ending world fear and an ferocious anxiety caused by the disappearing of the human race.
What can we and our readers expect from your upcoming EP?
This EP is Techno meeting synth pop and electro-house. Faithful to our artistic direction. On this EP, we deliberately chose to drastically slow down the tempo of our tracks, but the rest of it is full Nomenklatür
We also think that slower tracks last longer. We hope that your readers will have a good Time listening to this EP. People usually say our productions make bodies move and stimulate imagination.
Nowadays the playtime of a song is around 2 and a half min, advantage or disadvantage in your opinion?
Why not opt for the 15s TikTok format while we're at it! For some productions of Beatmaking, 15 seconds are enough in some cases so the loop is boring and hollow. On one hand a radio edit song of 3 minutes max is more appreciate to listeners because they can have the main hook within the first 30s. It also forces you to be efficient in a short time. But we are attached to long duration tracks, the progression can be fully developed.
If you could select an extraordinary location to play live, where would it take place?
A Circle night would be very exiting for us. What about playing at the Salzbourg Fortress ?
What song was for you a "game changer" concerning the genre you are in?
There are so many tracks we can think o, but the first coming in mind are:
Vitalic, his « Poney EP » was really a game changer in our genre in 2000
James Holden with his remix of Nathan Fake « the Sky was pink » in 2004 and Stefan Bodzin of course with Liebe Ist…EP in 2007 they brought a very minimalist sound, really thick and round, with significant step forward in sound control.
But also Gesaffelstein with his « Aleph » Album, both slow, powerful and martial. We could think of so many others!!!
... and of course what’s next for you?
Two other EPs are on their way, soon released on the Berlin based label “THISBEE Records”. One will be released on November 25th, the other in january/february 2023.
The first one, named “Endless Sunday”, includes a song with ODGE. Meanwhile, we are working on our show, as gigs are coming, and preparing other EPs.
