A fusion of electro pop, trip hop and cinematic synthpop: "Break the Matrix (Episode II)" by Moon and Aries

Moon and Aries

Moon and Aries

German composer & producer Tom Aries and Canadian writer / singer Jordana Moon team up as: MOON AND ARIES. To bring warmth and assurance for a brighter future. At first, they Arrived. Then they activated Paradise. Now they “Break The Matrix”. Moon and Aries are back with a big and bold statement.
With Tom Aries' memorable, seductive melodies and captivating instrumentals, blending with Jordana Moon's thought provoking and poetic lyrics and emotionally intimate vocals, they are back with a new Trilogy of music.

Moon and Aries means perfect Synth Pop touched by the 80s, it looks like your collaboration works fantastic, doesn't it?

That's a really flattering observation, thank you. Tom and I are really nostalgic about the 80s and 90s and we both have the same favorite bands/ artists from those eras! So it totally helps our collaboration because we have this in common; favorite music, favorite movies, favorite TV shows.
So basically similar inspirations. And Tom and I are just similar people in general and in many many ways, it's really quite amazing. We are best friends!

If you take a look at 2022, what were your highlights?

2022 was a year Tom and I spent doing very intensive Songwriting. Obviously we did this in 2021, but in 2022, we wrote a 5 song EP and a 9 song Trilogy. 14 songs that came from the absolute depth of our souls. This is no walk in the park, this sort of music takes extreme existential exploration.
So it was a year of more so trying to create the best music we can from 9 hrs apart, getting our hearts and minds aligned, and our goals focused on. But when we looked out into the external World, each song, each release was furthering our presence and ultimately our career. We've had great success in DJ pools and radio, which reflected positively on Spotify.

The new EP "Break the Matrix (Episode II)" is out, how would you describe it for a listener who doesn't know you so far?

Moon and Aries, Synth Pop Duo
Yes! Was released on November 3rd. Episode 2 is very esoteric. The three songs (Codes and Circles, Butterfly Effect and Rescued) have heavy layered concepts that Tom and I usually liken to Sci Fi movies.
First, our sound is a fusion of electro pop, trip hop and cinematic synthpop. And the lyrics I write have a poetic yet script-like way of storytelling. Our music is meant to elevate you, activate you and make you think and feel things in ways you maybe haven't explored.

Your output of releases was enormous, what song was the most difficult to record and which one is your personal favorite?

Tom and I explore the concepts of each song and theme of the whole album before we begin doing any of the musical legwork! Then Tom will get hit by inspiration and create a magical and brilliant instrumental. Then he sends it to me, and I'm always moved and obsessed with it 100% of the time. Then I do my part of writing the lyrics and finding the vocal melodies.
As a writer, sometimes my thoughts and words are far more eloquent than my actual feelings. So when I go to record vocals, sometimes I haven't reached a point where I fully embody every word I'm saying aka I'm sort of afraid to fully "go there." So, to get back to your main question, I have 3 songs that were equally as difficult to get my vocals and emotions where they needed to be. Those songs are The Arrival, Take Me Home and Paradise.
Favorite song ? Of course we love all 23. They all mean a lot and hold a special place, but our favorite song. .. out of all the songs we've released so far … Rescued.

Now you have a lot of great songs, are there any plans for some gigs?

Thanks so much, yeah we are really proud and excited about sharing our music so we can't wait to hit the stage. Tom has played a bit of our music live on piano in Europe, and I've sung to Tom's instrumentals here in Canada, but we are soooo looking forward to being on stage together. We are figuring that out as we speak! Being on stage is where Tom and I need to be. It's our main focus and goal right now.

The Year is nearly over, who was the most impressive artist for you?

Well of course we love our music most 😉 but outside of Moon and Aries, my favorite release from an artist "Eliza" and her new album, A Sky Without Stars. It's a brilliant trip hop/ neo soul experience.
I'm not sure what Tom's favorite album of the year was, but we both love love love any new music from Arcade Fire and London Grammar.

What's next for you?

We will be releasing Break The Matrix Episode 3 early February. So after that, we are looking to perform our 23 songs live in 2023 😎 And of course, make more music !
