Please Insert Coin: ‘Games’ by The Octopus Division

‘Games’ by The Octopus Division If you love the 80s and don't know Matt Muncie (aka The Octopus Division), you've definitely missed something. But as it's never too late for good music, you can catch up on what you've missed anytime and almost anywhere.  The Octopus Division's latest work is called ‘Games’ and once again represents the decade of neon lights perfectly. The major sequences are classically chosen, and you'll be hooked from the start. Back in the world of arcade games, the song becomes an intense journey of self-discovery, describing personal growth. Timelessness and shared experiences emphasize the importance of interpersonal bonds. ‘Games’ creates a dreamy atmosphere that allows you to immerse yourself in another world and makes you think about the future - all because you pressed the start button.  The entire production clearly bears Matt's signature, with classic drums, synth arrangements, and above all, the usual concise vocal part, which...

Your latest release, “Foreigner”, sounds fantastic. You seem to improve with every song. What inspired you to create this track and what does it mean to you?

"Foreigner" emerged during a transformative time in my life. I found myself in London, exploring the city alone for a month. This new setting got me reflecting on love and the constraints a relationship can sometimes impose. I started to see how societal norms and moral codes can sometimes limit our emotions. This track means a lot to me. It’s my most introspective work yet, and it marked a shift towards a more emotional way of creating music with Adrien. We learned so much from creating « Foreigner ».

You seem to enjoy being in the studio. How was your experience this time? Did you face any challenges or difficulties?

BEAR, Lionel Pesqué
Creating music videos is a crucial part of my process because they extend the narrative of the track, thus rounding off the artistic approach. Acting in "Foreigner" was particularly challenging because it deals with intimate feelings. Such exposure presented a significant challenge for me, but it also helped me better articulate the message I wanted to convey through this song. In every video shoot, I receive tremendous support from Adrien, Joakim, and Lionel. I am so lucky to work with such wonderful people.

How do you know when a song is ready to be released? Do you work on multiple songs at once or do you focus on one idea at a time?

It's a bit of a mix. We sometimes play around with a bunch of ideas at the same time until something clicks. But when it comes to knowing which song is ready to hit the airwaves, Adrien and I always seem to be on the same page. We create some demos, and when one stands out as the next big thing, we pour all our energy into it.

Do you have any plans to perform live in the near future?

Yeah, we've definitely got plans to hit the stage. But right now, it feels like we're small fish in this giant music industry ocean. We're working on carving out our own artistic niche and building up our fanbase. It's all coming together slowly but surely. We can't wait to perform live, but we know we've got to play the patience game for a bit longer.

What are you working on now and what can we expect from you next?

BEAR, Lionel Pesqué
Currently, we're working on our next release, scheduled for around September 2023. Fans can expect a wide range of musical expressions from us. Adrien and I are incredibly passionate about a diverse range of music, and we can't wait to infuse our upcoming work with our varied influences.
