Outside Is Void

...is a studio project by Thomas Marcus. The music explores various stylistic corners of pop music. If there is a common theme, it is probably one of the passage of time and moods collected along the journey. It is those moods which first lead to sound and harmonies, and later to associative and abstract lyrics during the creation of songs. Vintage digital and analog modular synthesis is combined with guitars to create sonic landscapes.

Who is behind the project "Outside Is Void" and what is the genesis?

The name "Outside Is Void" popped into my head one day, a long time ago. The music I create is quite simply the music I like to hear myself and it "just" appears as I am working on it. "Outside Is Void" is me. 

The work is very iterative: I may have some harmonies, melodies, and sounds to begin with. Then as I add one bit it inspires me to come up with the next one. I do not have a specific goal for individual songs; it is a creative flow. Over the years I worked on the songs with glacial speed until I was completely happy with each piece and really enjoyed listening to them myself.

"Track to stranger places" I would describe as a great piece of "Alternative Electro-Pop", which is also characterized by its sound selection, among other things, what is the story behind it and how long do you usually tinker with your soundscapes?

Thank you for noticing and pointing this out. I first created this driving, slightly groovy, and spacey song without the lyrics or vocals. I synthesize most sounds from scratch and tweak each sound so it fits and works together with all others adding to an overall sonic texture. It does not have to feature a lot of notes, but the sounds should evolve and be rich. 

I usually keep coming back to songs over a period of several months and keep tweaking sounds and adding and also removing parts. In this case the music was pretty much done when I started to intuitively write the lyrics without thinking hard. The lyrics describe an underlying positive feeling of going forward somewhere nice even though things might look rather pointless and grim when looked at rationally. It's a feeling I constantly have and which hopefully manifests in the track.

The single will also be part of "Lightgazer", what can we expect from your album?

The album has a very diverse selection of eleven songs including the three more "pop-friendly" ones which are already out (on Bandcamp / being added to Streaming). Some tracks are probably a bit on the weirder, sometimes even dark side, others are bitter-sweet. 

I consider the whole album one long sonic trip with lots of rich and dense sound structures and varying moods. There should be a lot to discover for sound lovers. The album is finished and I plan to release it around September this year (2023). It will most likely appear on Bandcamp first. The lyrics, by the way, are already published on my website.

"Outside Is Void" also means remixes, how did this passion come about?

I always enjoyed listening to really good remixes which change the original drastically. Since I like dancing to four-on-the-floor beats, the dance mixes are a fun and quick exercise. I may have to speed the song up a bit and then already get carried away with the rhythm and bass. Those are in some way the easiest remixes. In other cases it is a bit like playing with Lego. 

You have sequences, keep some and add new ones and see where that takes you. Interestingly, some of the sequences I erased for the album versions started working in the context of a remix and got used there. I find that curious and made me appreciate treating every sequence created with respect.

As a DIY artist, the whole burden rests on your shoulders, what part, if given the chance, would you like to give up?

I enjoy pretty much all steps and a lot is so integrated that one could not outsource it easily. Even the mixing and recording is part of the creative journey and tweaking. The mastering is a step which would be interesting to let somebody else do, and maybe even mixing stems to have fresh ears work on the mix. 

Creating videos, while fun, definitely requires so much time, skill, and attention to detail that I would not mind having somebody else be creative with it.

... and finally, what else is on your agenda in the near future, what are your plans for the near future?

I have two new songs in the pipeline for the time after the release of the album. For "Body with Me", which has a Motorik beat, I already shot video material while visiting New Mexico and the song is pretty much finished. 

However, I would like the sound to be a bit more grittier and industrial this time, so some more experimenting with modular synthesis and guitar pedals are in order. I myself am curious how that will sound in the end!

Wer steckt hinter dem Projekt "Outside Is Void" und wie sieht die Entstehungsgeschichte aus?

Der Name "Outside Is Void" ist mir eines Tages, vor langer Zeit, in den Kopf geschossen. Die Musik, die ich mache, ist ganz einfach die Musik, die ich selbst gerne höre, und sie entsteht "automatisch", während ich daran arbeite. "Outside Is Void" bin "ganz ich". 

Die Arbeit ist sehr iterativ: Ich habe eine Harmonie, Melodie oder Klang, mit denen ich anfange. Wenn ich dann ein Teil hinzufüge, inspiriert mich das für das nächste. Ich habe kein bestimmtes Ziel für einzelne Songs, es ist ein kreativer Fluss. Im Laufe der Jahre habe ich mit Gletschergeschwindigkeit an den Liedern gearbeitet, bis ich mit jedem Stück vollkommen zufrieden war und es wirklich genossen habe, sie mir anzuhören.

"Track to stranger places" würde ich als ein großartiges Stück "Alternative Electro-Pop" bezeichnen, das sich unter anderem auch durch seine Soundselection auszeichnet, welche Story steckt dahinter und wie lange tüftelst du für gewöhnlich an deinen Klanglandschaften?

Danke, dass Du das bemerkst und darauf hinweist. Ich habe diesen treibenden, leicht groovigen und spacigen Song zunächst ohne Text und Gesang erstellt. Ich synthetisiere die meisten Klänge von Grund auf und optimiere jeden Sound so, dass er zu allen anderen passt und mit ihnen zusammenarbeitet, um eine Gesamtklangtextur zu schaffen. 

Es müssen nicht viele Noten sein, aber die Klänge sollten sich weiterentwickeln und reichhaltig sein. Normalerweise kehre ich über einen Zeitraum von mehreren Monaten immer wieder zu den Songs zurück, um die Sounds zu optimieren und Teile hinzuzufügen oder zu entfernen. In diesem Fall war die Musik so gut wie fertig, als ich anfing, den Text intuitiv zu schreiben, ohne groß nachzudenken. 

Die Texte beschreiben ein unterschwelliges positives Gefühl, etwas Schönes zu erreichen, auch wenn die Dinge rational betrachtet eher sinnlos und düster aussehen. Es ist ein Gefühl, das ich ständig habe und das sich hoffentlich in dem Track manifestiert.

Die Single wird auch Teil von "Lightgazer" sein, was können wir von deinem Album erwarten?

Das Album hat eine sehr abwechslungsreiche Auswahl von elf Songs, einschließlich der drei eher "pop-freundlichen", die bereits veröffentlicht sind (auf Bandcamp / im Streaming). Einige Tracks sind wahrscheinlich etwas schräger, manchmal sogar düsterer, andere sind bitter-süß. Ich betrachte das ganze Album als eine lange Klangreise mit vielen tiefen und dichten Klangstrukturen und unterschiedlichen Stimmungen. 

Für Klangliebhaber dürfte es eine Menge zu entdecken geben. Das Album ist fertig und ich plane, es im September dieses Jahres (2023) zu veröffentlichen. Es wird höchstwahrscheinlich zuerst auf Bandcamp erscheinen. Die Texte sind übrigens schon auf meiner Website veröffentlicht.

"Outside Is Void" bedeutet auch Remixes, wie ist es zu dieser "Leidenschaft" gekommen?

Ich habe schon immer gerne richtig gute Remixe gehört, die das Original drastisch verändern. Da ich gerne zu Four-on-the-Floor-Beats tanze, sind die Dance-Mixe eine lustige und schnelle Übung für mich. Ich muss einen Song vielleicht ein bisschen beschleunigen und lass mich dann auch schon vom Rhythmus und Bass mitnehmen. 

Das sind in gewisser Weise die einfachsten Remixe. In anderen Fällen ist es ein bisschen wie das Spielen mit Lego. Man hat Sequenzen, behält einige bei und fügt neue hinzu und schaut, wohin das führt. Interessanterweise funktionierten einige der Sequenzen, die ich für die Albumversionen gelöscht hatte, im Kontext eines Remixes und wurden dort verwendet. Das fand ich interessant und hat mir gezeigt, dass ich jede Sequenz mit Respekt behandeln sollte.

Als DIY-Artist ruht die ganze Last auf deinen Schultern, welchen Teil würdest du, wenn die Möglichkeit bestehen würde, gerne abgeben?

Ich genieße so ziemlich alle Schritte und vieles ist so integriert, dass man es nicht einfach auslagern könnte. Selbst das Abmischen und Aufnehmen ist Teil der kreativen Reise und des Tweakings. Das Mastering ist ein Schritt, der interessant wäre, wenn man ihn jemand anderem überlassen könnte, und vielleicht sogar das Abmischen von Stems, damit jemand mit frischen Ohren an der Mischung arbeiten kann. 

Das Erstellen von Videos macht zwar Spaß, erfordert aber so viel Zeit, Geschick und Liebe zum Detail, dass es mir nichts ausmachen würde, wenn jemand anderes damit kreativ wäre.

... und finally, was steht demnächst noch auf deinem Programm, was sind deine Pläne für die nahe Zukunft?

Ich habe zwei neue Songs in der Pipeline für die Zeit nach der Veröffentlichung des Albums. Für "Body with Me", das einen Motorik-Beat hat, habe ich bereits Videomaterial bei einem Besuch in New Mexico gedreht und der Song ist so gut wie fertig. 

Allerdings möchte ich, dass der Sound dieses Mal etwas rauer und industrieller wird, also sind noch einige Experimente mit modularer Synthese und Gitarrenpedalen angesagt. Ich bin selbst gespannt, wie das am Ende klingen wird!
