“Cool Judas (EP)” by Vincent Christ
... has impressed the critics with his abundant and adaptable musical and visual productions. The world of Vincent Christ is an exhilarating fusion of art and essence, incorporating a multitude of defiant soundscapes. His forceful drums and expressive melodies are matched with lyrics that are humorous, poetic and visionary.
The second EP of the year, “Cool Judas”, consists of four captivating jewels that abound with evocative lyrical depth and an experimental glam guitar hum. This is Vincent Christ at his most enigmatic, the lead track “The Name Of The Pearl” oozes with menace and sensuality and delves into themes of secrecy and obsession. The track is accompanied by a creepy video that depicts hypnotic desert scenes that communicate an old-world rock 'n roll hazard.
“Perfect Life” and “The Words” exhibit a lively live sound that belies the live group’s recent accomplishments across the British metropolis. The final track “Painting Silence” is the exception, an emotional, synth-infused ballad about a solitary spirit.
As the artist Vincent Christ, what kind of musical style do you have and what are the main influences that helped you develop it?
I don’t feel like specific influences are too important. VC gets a lot of comparison to 80s artists though, which is something that I’ve started to hate to be honest. Still, I’d say that while a lot of artists operate with a sense of irony we are sincere, with hearts-on-sleeves. Musically we are ‘glittery’.
You have a great track called “The Name Of The Pearl” on your latest EP, “Cool Judas”. How did you come up with this song?
Lyrically I was interested in developing a sense of hermeticism. A pearl is such a rich symbolic image with loaded meaning, so much so that it hardly has any meaning left. Something neutral can be very mysterious, and a pearl in this sense does not actually exist other than being a name. Musically, we established something pulsating and menacing, and took this sound further in the music video. It was 40 degrees when we filmed that music video. Shouts out to Guadalupe.
You have been very active in creating music lately, how do you approach your creative process?
There’s so much material ready to be released, I’m talking about albums worth of songs, videos we’ve shot from all over. Being a musician is like being some kind of servant of the cultural sphere, you turn up, put the work in, fulfill your role. Come and see us live and you won’t see us doing karaoke, you’ll get a proper show.
What are the three songs of yours that you think our readers should listen to?
I’d pick three that are not released yet ideally. From songs that have already come out I’d say ‘Heart On A Chain’, ‘I See Jets’, and ‘Love Song Conspiracy’.
