‘The Journey’ - The Octopus Division

‘The Journey’ - The Octopus Division In ‘The Journey,’ a sonic mosaic unfolds that—permeated by neon-soaked synth pads and a melody that feels like memory—is less a song than a spiritual compass. The time that relentlessly pursues us, according to ‘Time keeps chasing us every day’, is not portrayed as an enemy, but as a constant touchstone that we face with our heads held high: ‘ We won't let the rain wash us away’ . Photography, here metaphorically as a key to the past, opens doors to moments that seem long gone but live on within us. The chorus – a kind of collective mantra – describes not just a journey, but an intertwining of stories that support each other. The garden in which hopes take root becomes a symbol of what must be nurtured in order to flourish. And when ‘ our songs have lost a note or two ’, it is not a flaw, but proof of lived depth. A song that is not meant to be heard, but to be lived through – like a familiar glance at an old photo album by candlelight. b...

How Clever Lyrics Can Brighten Your Day: “Fuck PMS” by Jumana

“Fuck PMS” by Jumana

With her deep and distinctive voice, Jumana delivers honest and witty songs that blend indie pop and folk. The Berlin-based artist launched their solo project in 2019 and followed up their debut single "Schönleinstraße" with a bold and empowering anthem about premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
“Fuck PMS” was written in autumn 2019, when Jumana faced severe physical and emotional distress due to PMS. The song reflects the monthly ordeal of pain, anger, and frustration that affects many people who menstruate. The lyrics are clever and humorous, offering a light-hearted perspective and a sense of camaraderie to those who share the same struggle. This song is a homage to all the people who overcome the challenges of PMS and keep living their lives. With her skills and potential, Jumana is a valuable asset to the Indie Scene and a star in the making.

When did you fall in love with music, and how does it shape your artistic expression and identity?

One thing that instantly came to my mind: When I was a small kid I really wanted to have “schöne Musik” - by that I was referring to one of these colourful cassette recorder players with an attached microphone. Luckily I then got one for my 3rd birthday and remember spending a lot of time recording my voice with it.

What was the motivation/trigger behind your latest song, “Fuck PMS”?

It was the quickest song I ever wrote. On an autumn evening in 2019 I was feeling low from PMS and I started playing guitar and singing along some gibberish. 10 mins later, “Fuck PMS” was born. When playing the song live at Open Mics in Berlin I quickly realised I wasn’t the only one feeling like that towards the topic.

What are your goals and what can we expect from you in 2024?

I will release my Debut EP “Schönleinstraße” in mid January and am currently planning the release show. I don’t want to talk about my goals for 2024 in an interview but I’m looking forward to a year full of creativity, mindfulness and flow.
