‘The Tower to Surpass the Clouds (Album)’ by Shining Fields

‘The Tower to Surpass the Clouds (Album)’ by Shining Fields Whenever the name Shining Fields is mentioned in connection with music, enthusiasts of ambient, drone, or experimental genres take notice. Now, the solo artist has released a new full-length album, which is also available on cassette. With ‘The Tower to Surpass the Clouds,’ the artist delves into Japan’s history, specifically the time around the Great Kantō Earthquake. This earthquake marked a tragic moment in Japanese history. It halted the slow process of cultural integration and amplified the sounds of militarization and nationalism. Foreigners, especially Koreans, were unjustly targeted by roving gangs. These gangs aimed to free Japan from foreign influence, which they perceived as a threat to the emperor’s power. In the days following the earthquake, anarchists Sakae Osugi and Noe Ito were pursued and executed by the military without trial. This incident became known as the Amakasu Incident. Fateful Entanglements: “In Every Way But One - EP” by Binding Blank Pages

“In Every Way But One - EP” by Binding Blank Pages

A debut EP titled “In Every Way But One,” featuring members with roots in Greece, the Netherlands, France, and the Czech Republic – welcome to Binding Blank Pages. The band’s 6-track work offers complex guitar layering, introspective lyrics, and dynamic sound escalations that harmonise in their brilliance.
Binding Blank Pages
Nuanced vocal lines and melancholic melody leads culminate in distorted soundscapes where the turbulence dissolves into a feeling of acceptance.
The opener “Passersby” captivates with its evolutionary structure, while “Small Steps” finds a delicate balance between vehemence and playfulness. “Skies” invites a foray into the realms of New Romantic, carried by an ambiance that radiates an almost tangible romance. “Indigo Veil” leads back, prompts a brief pause, and lays the groundwork for “Again & Again” before the final title track “In Every Way But One” completes the work with a grand final chord.
Binding Blank Pages navigate with finesse through the fields of indie rock, skilfully incorporating elements of other musical genres. Fateful entanglements, introspective self-reflection, and the melancholy of lost affection do not remain in musical stagnation but unfold an EP that is far from content-empty pages and instead reveals a musical essence that captivates the listener. In summary: simply a magnificent debut.
