Escapism & the Search for Identity: ‘Thorns’ by WARTERAUM

‘Thorns’ by WARTERAUM WARTERAUM had withdrawn from the limelight for a while, but as the saying goes, ‘Good things come to those who wait.’ Now they’re back, not as a solo project, but as a duo, sounding better than ever.    Their latest release, ‘Thorns,’ serves not only as a preview for their EP but also as an auditory laboratory.   The sonic landscape was crafted using an experimental approach, incorporating various feedback and distortion techniques. The result of this creative alchemy is deep bass tones that captivate the listener, vocal-like elements reminiscent of mysterious chants from another dimension, and sonically atonal percussion that challenges and fascinates the ear. Taking this direction was a bold step beyond conventional boundaries, giving ‘Thorns’ its unique and expressive character. The vocals impress once again : dark, mysterious, and impactful.  The lyrics revolve around escapism, the search for identity in a chaotic world, and existential inner struggles th

Q&A Today: C.O.M.F.O.R.T.A.B.L.E (“Soundtracks For War Zones And Games”)

C.O.M.F.O.R.T.A.B.L.E

...(an abbreviation for “Chords Or Melody Formed Over Rich Textures All Become Luminous Echos”) is a musical project that has been active for quite some time and recently found its way to NenesButler. The reason for this was the latest album, “Soundtracks For War Zones And Games,” which was released in early June.
This long-play album stands out primarily due to its unique mood and the created atmosphere, setting it apart from other works. From drone and ambient to piano, glitch, experimental sounds, electronica, bass, and beats – “Soundtracks For War Zones And Games” navigates through various sonic landscapes brilliantly, ultimately establishing its impact on the sonic front.
Even after the imaginary last shot has faded, the energy of the final note resonates indefinitely. Listening to this album becomes an experience, providing a backdrop to existence. If you’re not yet familiar with “C.O.M.F.O.R.T.A.B.L.E,” the following brief Q&A will give you a first glimpse before you delve into their discography.

Could you please share the story behind the artist C.O.M.F.O.R.T.A.B.L.E and what ignited your musical journey?

Whenever I am asked this question, I always think of Albert Camus's Myth of Sisyphus essay in that; I am persisting in the face of absurdity and not giving myself over to false hope. This “journey” you speak of will be all the better if it has no explanation or ending.

What are your main sources of musical inspiration?

I don't believe in 'inspiration'. Only hard work grinds out creativity from the daily suffering and drudgery of life.

Your song ‘Soundtracks For War Zones And Games’ is the first track from an album that I would describe as a captivating musical journey through reality. How would you describe the album’s overall atmosphere?

A feeling of dread, profound regret and a stubborn search for hope despite knowing there isn't any.

From drone and ambient to electronica and beyond, the album encompasses a broad spectrum. Do you believe that categorizing music into numerous genres is essential, or does it hinder us from discovering great music because listeners tend to stick too much to one or two genres?

Music is really all about personal taste though no one wants to admit it. I don't pay attention to genre and have no actual idea what people try to justify as their preferences. When enough people like something, they give it a name and call it a genre. It makes no difference to me or what I am trying to do.

As an artist, how do you determine when a track is ready for release?

Self-belief is the real determiner. I would never put anything out if I waited for it to be "ready". I also do not believe that I am/or want to be an "artist".

If you could choose your dream location for a performance, where would it be?

On the front line in a war zone or on the frozen deck of a ship sailing in Antarctica.

Being an independent musician comes with its challenges. How do you keep everything in balance?

Blood, emotional guts, sweat, millions of unanswered prayers and a consistent work ethic. The rest will take care of itself or destroy me.

What are your plans for 2024?

An EP called 'Planet of Memories' (two ambient tracks and two with a beat) in collaboration with Berlin based composer Hans Kaemmerer will be released on June 21st.
An EDM single called 'Heart's Throat' in July followed by more singles and another album, which is already about half written. These are the current and, most likely, will be the other realised goals so far for this year.
