‘The Journey’ - The Octopus Division

‘The Journey’ - The Octopus Division In ‘The Journey,’ a sonic mosaic unfolds that—permeated by neon-soaked synth pads and a melody that feels like memory—is less a song than a spiritual compass. The time that relentlessly pursues us, according to ‘Time keeps chasing us every day’, is not portrayed as an enemy, but as a constant touchstone that we face with our heads held high: ‘ We won't let the rain wash us away’ . Photography, here metaphorically as a key to the past, opens doors to moments that seem long gone but live on within us. The chorus – a kind of collective mantra – describes not just a journey, but an intertwining of stories that support each other. The garden in which hopes take root becomes a symbol of what must be nurtured in order to flourish. And when ‘ our songs have lost a note or two ’, it is not a flaw, but proof of lived depth. A song that is not meant to be heard, but to be lived through – like a familiar glance at an old photo album by candlelight. b...

"Awake In The Night (Album)" by fake plastic

"Awake In The Night (Album)" by fake plastic

They move skilfully between post-punk, indie rock, and alternative rock, and prove with their album "Awake In The Night" that they have brought a musical enrichment to old-school garage punk rock. fake plastic are back on NenesButler and present a long-player with 11 songs that has it all.
The introduction with "Pale Moon" is extremely rhythm-oriented; the drums take centre stage together with the vocals and are somewhat reminiscent of The Stranglers. "I Want In" is passionately rocking and impresses with its riffs. The third song, "Waiting/Working", confirms their musical range and ventures into the territory of classic rock meets folk rock. As with its two predecessors, the chorus is once again a highlight.

With "Riptide", we stay a little in the early '70s - note the fantastic riff - only to realise enthusiastically that fake plastic have a terrific '80s-style chorus on board here. It's one of my favourites on the album. "Your Gods Are False" is thought-provoking and finds its home in folk rock, featuring a great solo and is another treat for the listener.
Now we’re back in the '80s; in "Run Away With Me", the '70s shimmer through, but it has the power of 80s Hard Rock. The tempo picks up with "Do I Feel the Right Way", and we find ourselves in the '90s. Slight punk nuances permeate the track, making it my second favourite. The next track promises pure energy, but with "On Attack" they take a clever turn and we are treated to an elegant post-punk ride. We already presented "The Long Night" a few weeks ago, and it still inspires.
"The Road" - favourite number four if we consider the predecessor as number three - shows a great arrangement and leans towards Americana Rock without renouncing the band’s typical means. Finally, "The Night Owl" provides a somewhat calmer finale to an all-round successful album that makes you want to experience fake plastic live.
"Awake In The Night" is an impressive ride through the decades and should be enjoyed loud and in one go, which is why the next live dates are listed here. Take your chance, take it live!
