A Lament for Existence: ‘The Flesh of Birds’ by E.G. Phillips

‘The Flesh of Birds’ by E.G. Phillips The new release ‘The Flesh of Birds’ by E.G. Phillips , one of our favourite composers, is an astute and sarcastic reflection on human relationships and the human condition.  With subtle irony, he illuminates the absurdities of life and highlights the contrasts between beauty and decay, hope and disappointment, instinct and intellect.   Like an archaeologist, he uncovers moments of apparent harmony and their inexorable decay, questioning the importance of possessions and relationships, as well as the fundamental nature of survival in a world oscillating between abundance and scarcity. In the end, he leaves us in a state of resignation and heightened awareness of the duality of existence.   The musical framework is once again his unmistakable Americana cello-folk style , which, like the lyrics, gets straight to the heart of the matter . E.G. Phillips once again proves to himself and to us just how absurd our existence often is.  D...

'Can't Get Through' by Hyperestis

'Can't Get Through' by Hyperestis

In the vastness of cosmic musical eternity, sooner or later you will come across The Cure and be inspired by Robert Smith. This is exactly what happened with Hyperestis, the gothic darkwave solo project of Gabrielle Emerson and her debut EP 'A Void'
(c) by the artist (Hyperestis)
Since good music has no expiration date, today we delve into one of its tracks, 'Can't Get Through', a poetic reflection on inner conflicts, emotional burdens and the challenges of maintaining interpersonal relationships.
The dynamic between closeness and distance is often complex, as the need to connect can come with the realisation that this connection can be a burden for the other person. In 'Can't Get Through' the lyrical ego journeys through a cycle of denial, holding on and letting go, grappling with the difficulty of accepting boundaries - a necessity that is simultaneously perceived as a painful process.
Musically, as already mentioned, we find ourselves in a Cure-esque landscape that feels incredibly distant yet deeply intimate. Few artists can capture this mood, but Hyperestis are undeniably one of them.
You drift through the world of darkwave, infused with gothic nuances, to realise at the end that you're sad in a happy way.
'Can't Get Through' is just one of five exceptional tracks on the EP. Dive into 'A Void', lose yourself in 'Cut the Cord', dance to the D.Mode-inspired 'We Drew our Lines' and transcend the here and now with 'Never Understand'. A Must Listen!
